What size is the outlet on a standard IBC tote?

The near-universal North American standard is a 2-inch butterfly valve terminating in an S60x6 coarse buttress thread — that is 60 mm outside diameter with a 6 mm pitch. Almost every adapter you will buy, from garden hose to camlock to 2-inch NPT, threads onto that S60x6 outlet. A minority of European and older units use S100x8; measure before you order.

What adapter do I need to connect a garden hose to an IBC tote?

An S60x6 female to 3/4-inch GHT male adapter, usually with an integral shut-off. Buy one with a captive EPDM washer and hand-tighten only — these are coarse buttress threads and they crack if you put a wrench on them. For irrigation duty, step up to a 1-inch or 2-inch camlock instead; garden hose thread chokes flow badly at tote head pressures.

Should I replace the gasket on a used tote?

Always. An EPDM gasket takes a compression set after a year under load and will weep at exactly the moment you least want 275 gallons on the floor. It is a few dollars. We fit a new one to every Grade A and B tote before shipping, and we sell them by the bag for fleets.

Do you sell IBC heaters and insulation?

Yes — silicone band heaters, full wrap-around heating jackets with thermostats, and insulated covers for freeze protection. In Pennsylvania the practical answer for winter storage is usually an insulated jacket plus a 200-watt band rather than a full heated blanket, unless you need the product at a working viscosity on demand.

Received wisdom, examined

Four things people believe that are wrong.

“An adapter is an adapter.”

Flow scales with roughly the fourth power of bore. A 3/4-inch garden hose adapter on a fully open 2-inch valve turns a seven-minute transfer into forty-six minutes, and the valve is not the constraint at all.

“Tighter is safer.”

S60x6 is a coarse buttress thread in moulded plastic, designed for hand tightening against a captive washer. Nineteen percent of the gasket failures we logged last year were over-tightening, and eleven of those cracked the flange.

“You can reuse a gasket.”

A gasket that has been compressed, removed and re-compressed rarely seals as well, because the impression no longer lines up with the flange. Opening a container is a gasket event.

“Viton is overkill.”

Fifty-one of fifty-six chemical-incompatibility failures last year were EPDM against something petroleum-derived. Viton costs about eleven dollars more and is the cheapest insurance in the entire specification.

Further questions

How do I identify my thread?

Tape measure across the outside of the male thread on the valve outlet. 60 mm — about 2⅜ inches — is S60x6, the modern standard that nearly every adapter fits. 100 mm is S100x8, common on older and European units; order a reducing bushing and forget about it permanently.

Which gasket for my product?

EPDM for water, brine, glycol, dilute acids and bases, alcohols and food ingredients. Viton for vegetable and mineral oils, fuels, kerosene and aromatic solvents. If your product contains any petroleum distillate at all, specify Viton.

Do you fit accessories before shipping?

Yes, at no labour charge on the same order. Fitted also means the leak test happens here rather than on your floor, which is the real argument for it.

Vocabulary, in twelve lines

IBC: Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC: An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare: Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass: Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node: A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6: The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents: What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle: A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade: FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.
UN 31HA1: Marking for a composite IBC approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly and carries a service life.
Regrind: Granulated recycled HDPE. Post-industrial IBC regrind goes to pipe, conduit, pallets — never food contact.
Avoided burden: Environmental cost that did not occur because a container was reused instead of manufactured. Not an offset.
