The reason half of all IBC returns happen is a $9 adapter with the wrong thread. This chart ends that. Measure your outlet, find the row, order the part.

Short answer

IBC totes use an S60x6 coarse buttress outlet thread (60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch) on a 2" butterfly valve. Adapters convert it to camlock, NPT or garden hose. Older units use S100x8, bridged with a reducing bushing. Gaskets are EPDM by default, Viton for fuels and aromatics.

Without a vented lid, every figure above drops by 40–60% and the bottle sidewalls pull inward. A vented 6-inch lid costs a few dollars and is the single cheapest performance upgrade available to an IBC.

What thread is on an IBC tote outlet?

S60x6 on almost every modern container: a coarse buttress thread, 60 mm outside diameter, 6 mm pitch. Older units and some European stock use S100x8 at 100 mm. Measure the outside diameter of the male thread on the valve outlet — 60 mm or 100 mm tells you immediately which family you are in, and a reducing bushing bridges the two.

How fast does an IBC tote drain by gravity?

Through a fully open 2-inch butterfly valve with a vented lid, a full 275 gallon tote of water drains at roughly 55–70 gallons per minute initially, slowing as head pressure drops, emptying in about 6–8 minutes. Through a 3/4-inch garden hose fitting the same tote takes closer to 45 minutes. If the lid is not vented, the bottle partially collapses and the flow falls off a cliff — vent it.

EPDM or Viton gaskets?

EPDM is the default and handles water, most acids and bases, alcohols and glycols well. It fails badly against fuels, oils and aromatic hydrocarbons — where Viton is correct. Viton costs several times more and is unnecessary for the majority of duty. If your product contains any petroleum distillate, specify Viton and do not economise.

Can I put a wrench on an IBC adapter?

No. S60x6 is a coarse buttress thread in moulded polyethylene or polypropylene, designed for hand tightening against a captive washer. A wrench cracks the flange — usually not immediately, but three weeks later, at two in the morning, all over the floor. Hand tight plus a new gasket is the correct assembly.

Which thread do I have?

Measure the outside diameter of the male thread on the valve outlet. 60 mm — about 2⅜ inches — is S60x6, the modern standard. 100 mm is S100x8, common on older and European units, and a reducing bushing bridges the two permanently.

Why does my tote drain so slowly?

Check the lid before you buy a pump. With a sealed lid the container pulls a partial vacuum, the sidewalls draw inward and average flow drops 55%. A vented 6-inch lid costs a few dollars and roughly doubles the rate.

EPDM or Viton?

EPDM for water, brine, glycol, dilute acids and bases, alcohols and food ingredients. Viton for vegetable and mineral oils, fuels, kerosene and aromatic solvents. Eleven dollars separates them and it is the cheapest decision in the whole specification.

Vocabulary, in twelve lines

IBC: Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC: An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare: Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass: Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node: A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6: The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents: What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle: A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade: FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.
UN 31HA1: Marking for a composite IBC approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly and carries a service life.
Regrind: Granulated recycled HDPE. Post-industrial IBC regrind goes to pipe, conduit, pallets — never food contact.
Avoided burden: Environmental cost that did not occur because a container was reused instead of manufactured. Not an offset.
