A default cycle is how you end up with a tote that looks clean and smells like the last product. We identify the residue first and select the chemistry second — which is slower, costs more, and is the only way the result means anything.

Which wash a residue actually needs.

This table is the closest thing we have to a house style. It is also free advice if you wash your own containers.

Water, honestly

Washing uses water. Here is what we do about that.

A hot caustic cycle on a 275 gallon container uses roughly 45 gallons of water. That is not nothing, and an ecology page that pretended otherwise would not be worth reading.

What makes it defensible is the comparison. Manufacturing the replacement container consumes about 190 gallons of process water — more than four times the wash — plus 88 kg of CO₂e and 10 gallons of crude-oil feedstock that washing does not touch at all.

We also reclaim. First-stage rinse water is filtered and reused as pre-rinse on the next cycle, which recovers roughly 40% of throughput. Caustic solution is recharged rather than dumped between batches. The net water cost of returning a container to service is around 27 gallons — about 14% of what it costs to build a new one.

How do you clean an IBC tote?

The cycle depends entirely on the residue. Water-soluble benign products get a cold triple rinse. Sugars, syrups and proteins get hot caustic at 140–160 °F with a rotating spray head. Oils and fats get a degreasing cycle with a surfactant package. Food-contact work adds a sanitising rinse and an air dry. Everything gets a new gasket, because a clean tote with a tired gasket is not a clean tote.

Can washing make an industrial tote food grade?

No, and anybody who says otherwise is either confused or lying. Polyethylene is semi-permeable: surfactants, solvents, glycols and ag chemicals migrate into the bottle wall during service and leach back out into whatever you put in next. No wash cycle reverses absorption. Food-grade status depends on the container's entire prior history, not on its current cleanliness.

What happens to the rinsate?

It is collected, segregated by residue class and handled under permit — neutralised and discharged to sewer where permitted, or consigned to a licensed processor where not. We do not discharge untreated rinsate to ground or storm, and we retain the tickets. If your material requires specialist rinsate treatment, that cost is stated in the quote rather than absorbed and quietly cut somewhere.

Do you provide wash records?

Yes, as standard: date, serial, declared prior contents, cycle used, temperature, detergent, sanitiser where applicable, operator and post-wash photographs. That pack is what makes a washed tote defensible in an audit, and it is the reason customers in regulated food work use us rather than a pressure washer in a yard.

Received wisdom, examined

Four things people believe that are wrong.

Hotter is cleaner.

Above 152 °F we gained one minute of cycle time and nothing in cleaning, and started deforming bottles. The controllable variable is contact time, not heat — twelve minutes at 150 °F beats eight at 175 on every axis we can measure.

Bleach cleans containers.

It sanitises surfaces that are already clean. It does not remove sugar films, protein soils or oils. And never mix it with an acid or an ammonia-bearing product.

You can wash out an odour.

A persistent smell after a proper wash means the compound has absorbed into the bottle wall and is desorbing. No cleaning reverses that. If the container is destined for anything sensitive, the answer is a rebottle rather than a fifth wash.

Skipping the cold pre-rinse saves time.

Heat sets protein soils and caramelises sugar films. Four minutes saved turns a straightforward cycle into a two-pass job, which costs twenty and ages the bottle for nothing.

Can you validate a wash for our audit?

We supply a retained record — date, serial, declared prior contents, cycle, temperature, detergent, sanitiser where used, operator and post-wash photographs. That is documentation rather than third-party validation, and we describe it that way deliberately. It is what makes a washed container defensible in a food-safety audit.

What do you do with the rinsate?

Can I send containers with unknown contents?

Yes, but they get a triple rinse and a Grade C ceiling. We will not run a caustic or degreasing cycle on an unknown residue, because selecting chemistry blind is how rinsate problems and exotherms happen.

Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.

What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
