IBC TOTESPA

Start here

How to buy a used IBC tote without getting a bad one.

There are perhaps six decisions in this purchase and most buyers make them in the wrong order — starting with price, which should be last. Work through them in this sequence and the right container, at the right grade, at the right price, falls out of the process.

Short answer

Buy in this order: define the duty, then the minimum grade that satisfies it, then confirm prior contents in writing, then specify fittings and gasket material, then size the freight, and only then compare prices. Deciding on price first is how people end up with the wrong container cheaply.

Describe the liquid and the quantity — we'll specify grade, fittings and gasket and quote it.

We reply in writing — this is where the quote lands.

US or Canadian number — (XXX) XXX-XXXX

5-digit US ZIP (19406) or Canadian code (A1A 1A1)

We answer by email — we don't run a phone line, so every quote arrives in writing with photos, grades and freight already itemised.

The sequence

Six decisions, in this order.

  1. 01

    Define the duty precisely

Not 'storage' — what liquid, what specific gravity, what temperature, indoors or out, static or transported, and is anything downstream edible. Those six facts determine every subsequent decision, and four of them determine whether you are legally allowed to use the container at all.

  2. 02

Pick the minimum grade that satisfies it

Food grade if anything downstream is edible. Grade A if trace carry-over matters or the container is customer-facing. Grade B for nearly everything industrial, agricultural and utility. Grade C for site water, stormwater and anything that will be abused. Buying above the minimum is the most common way to waste money here.

  3. 03

Get the prior contents in writing

A product name, logged against the original label. Not 'soap', not 'food stuff', not 'I think it was juice'. If the seller cannot supply it, the container is an unknown and should be priced as Grade C regardless of how it looks.

  4. 04

    Specify fittings and gasket material

Confirm the outlet thread (S60x6 on nearly everything modern), the valve type you need, and — critically — the gasket. EPDM for water, acids, bases, alcohols and glycols; Viton for anything petroleum-derived or aromatic. The wrong gasket is an eleven-dollar saving and a 275-gallon problem.

  5. 05

Size the freight before you compare prices

Freight is frequently a third of delivered cost. Ask for it as a separate line. Check whether you need a liftgate, whether your dock takes a 53-foot trailer, and whether the quantity gets you onto a scheduled corridor rather than a dedicated movement.

  6. 06

    Now compare prices

And compare like with like: same grade definition, same prior-contents documentation, same fittings, freight itemised the same way. A cheaper quote with no prior-contents record and bundled freight is usually not cheaper at all.

Duty to grade

The lookup table that does most of the work.

Find your duty, read across. If your case is not here, describe it in the form and we will place it.

Red flags

Seven things that should end a conversation.

No prior-contents record

The only unfixable unknown in the transaction. Price it as Grade C or walk.

Stock photography only

Ask for serial-matched photographs of the actual containers. Refusal tells you everything.

'Food grade' with no history

Food grade is a documented chain of custody. Without the record, the phrase is decorative.

Bundled freight

If freight is inside the unit price, you cannot compare quotes and you probably are not meant to.

No leak test

Fill-and-hold per serial is a basic, cheap step. Its absence says the yard is moving containers, not grading them.

Vague grade definition

Ask for it in writing. 'It's clean' is a feeling, not a specification.

Reluctance to say no

A seller who has never refused a sale on suitability grounds will not refuse yours either.

Buying questions

Buying guide — FAQ

What is the single most important thing when buying a used IBC tote?

The prior-contents record. Everything else — cage condition, bottle clarity, valve age — can be inspected, repaired or replaced. What the container previously held cannot be inspected and cannot be undone, because polyethylene absorbs. A seller who cannot tell you the previous product in writing is selling you an unknown, and it should be priced as one.

How do I avoid overpaying?

Decide the duty first and buy the minimum grade that satisfies it. Most overpaying in this market comes from buying Grade A for duty that Grade B handles perfectly, or buying new because a specification nobody has re-examined since 2016 says so. The second most common form is paying a bundled price where freight is hidden inside the unit cost.

Should I buy locally or online?

Locally, almost always, and not for sentimental reasons. A tote is a big, light, awkward object and freight is often a third of the delivered cost. Buying from 400 miles away means paying to move air. It also means you cannot inspect, and inspection is most of the protection you have in this market.

What should I check when the delivery arrives?

Count them. Open every lid and smell. Sight each cage for square. Check the valves are the type you ordered and the gaskets are new. Photograph anything that does not match the quote before it comes off the truck — after it is unloaded, the conversation is much harder.

Vocabulary, in twelve lines

IBC
Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade
FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.
UN 31HA1
Marking for a composite IBC approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly and carries a service life.
Regrind
Granulated recycled HDPE. Post-industrial IBC regrind goes to pipe, conduit, pallets — never food contact.
Avoided burden
Environmental cost that did not occur because a container was reused instead of manufactured. Not an offset.
