IBC TOTESPA

2026 · Mid-Atlantic

What an IBC tote actually costs, published.

Most of this industry treats pricing as something to be extracted through a contact form. It is not commercially sensitive — it is a commodity with observable bands, and publishing them mostly means we stop wasting each other's time on quotes that were never going to work.

Short answer

Mid-Atlantic 2026 bands: Grade C $60–$95, Grade B $110–$165, Grade A $165–$225, food grade $225–$300, rebottled $250–$340 and new $420–$560 for 275 gallon composite units. Freight typically adds $15–$55 per container. We pay $15–$85 for empties.

Bands are for planning. A quote with your quantity, grade and zip takes about an hour.

We reply in writing — this is where the quote lands.

We answer by email — we don't run a phone line, so every quote arrives in writing with photos, grades and freight already itemised.

Freight

What delivery adds, honestly.

Itemised, because a bundled price is impossible to compare.

Typical freight cost per container from Norristown, PA
DistanceScheduled corridorDedicated loadLiftgateWill-call
Under 25 miles$15 – $22$28 – $40+$45 flat$0

120 – 200 miles$38 – $55$80 – $120+$65 flat$0
Over 200 milesBrokeredQuotedQuoted$0

Per-container freight falls sharply with quantity — the numbers above assume a partial load. A full truck of 48 spreads the same movement across four times as many units, which is why truckload pricing looks dramatic and why we push people toward corridor days.

Prices — FAQ

Why do IBC tote prices vary so much between sellers?

Three reasons, in order of size. First, grade means different things to different yards — a 'Grade A' from a yard with no written standard may be another yard's Grade C. Second, freight is often bundled into the unit price, so a $95 tote from 300 miles away can cost more delivered than a $140 one from 30. Third, prior-contents documentation costs money to maintain and yards that skip it sell cheaper.

Are IBC tote prices going up or down?

Used prices have been broadly flat in real terms since 2023, with a mild upward drift in food-grade stock because demand grew faster than the supply of documented edible-prior containers. New container prices track resin and steel and have been volatile. The largest movement is seasonal rather than annual: expect to pay 10–18% more in March than in January for the same used container.

How much should I be paid for my used totes?

$15 to $85 per unit in this region, depending on grade, prior contents, quantity, storage condition and distance. Documented food-grade prior contents, a clear bottle, a square cage and covered storage put you at the top. Unknown contents, outdoor storage with water inside and a load under twelve units put you at the bottom.

Is it cheaper to buy or to recondition what I own?

Reconditioning usually wins on cost and always wins on serial retention: $95–$175 per unit against $110–$225 to buy a used replacement and $420–$560 new. It also wins on carbon by a wide margin. Buying replacements wins only on speed, where one to three days beats five to ten.

Vocabulary, in twelve lines

IBC
Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade
FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.
UN 31HA1
Marking for a composite IBC approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly and carries a service life.
Regrind
Granulated recycled HDPE. Post-industrial IBC regrind goes to pipe, conduit, pallets — never food contact.
Avoided burden
Environmental cost that did not occur because a container was reused instead of manufactured. Not an offset.
