Three mistakes split bottles every winter. All three are avoidable.

We buy back a predictable number of containers each spring with a split at the base radius, and almost every one of them tells the same story: it was partly full, it was outdoors, and nobody thought about it until the thaw.

Short answer

To winterise an IBC tote: drain it below 10% if the contents are not needed, or pair an insulated jacket with a thermostatic band heater if they are. Avoid partial fills between 20% and 80% — they split more bottles than full containers do. A jacket alone extends time but does not prevent a sustained freeze.

The decision

Four options, in cost order.

  1. 01

    Drain it — free, reliable

    For anything not needed until spring: site water, stormwater, irrigation supply, wash-down stock. Drain below about 10%, leave the valve open and the lid vented, and store it where meltwater cannot refill it. Nothing that is not there can freeze.

  2. 02

    Insulated jacket — moderate, partial

    A fitted reflective jacket roughly triples the time a container takes to reach freezing from a given start temperature. On its own it carries you through a two-day cold snap, not through a week. It also makes any heating you add dramatically cheaper to run.

  3. 03

    Jacket plus band heater — the working answer

    A 1,000 to 1,700 W silicone band heater with a thermostat, under a jacket. That combination holds a 275 gallon container above freezing through a Pennsylvania winter at a running cost most operations do not notice. Without the jacket, the same heater struggles and costs three times as much to run.

  4. 04

    Bring it inside — best if you can

    Obvious, frequently impossible, and worth stating anyway. A container indoors needs none of the above. Where space is the constraint, prioritise moving the containers whose contents are most expensive rather than the ones nearest the door.

Note the latex row. Emulsions are irreversibly destroyed by a single freeze — the polymer coagulates and no amount of warming brings it back. That is a product loss far exceeding the container, and it is why emulsion storage in an unheated outdoor tote is a poor idea in this climate regardless of the container's survival.

If it happened anyway

What to do with a frozen or split container.

Frozen but intact — do not apply direct heat

No torches, no open flame, no heat gun against the wall. HDPE deforms well below the temperature that thaws a large ice mass quickly. Move it somewhere warm and wait, or run a band heater at its thermostat setting.

Bulged but not split

The bottle has yielded and will not return to shape. It is still serviceable for non-critical duty but it has lost cage clearance and should not be stacked. A rebottle restores it fully.

Split at the wall

Structurally finished as a liquid container. The cage is almost certainly fine. Send it to us — we rebottle the good cages and granulate the bottles, and you will get paid something for a container you were going to skip.

At what temperature will an IBC tote freeze?

Water in a 275 gallon tote begins forming ice at the walls when sustained ambient drops below about 28 °F, and the thermal mass means it takes roughly 36 to 60 hours of sustained sub-freezing conditions to develop ice thick enough to threaten the bottle. Southeastern Pennsylvania delivers that several times most winters, usually in January.

Is a partly full tote safer than a full one?

No — it is worse, which surprises people. A full container freezes inward from the walls and the expanding ice has nowhere convenient to go but upward toward the fill opening. A partly full container has a large surface area, freezes a thick surface slab, and then expands into the sidewalls. Partial fills between about 20% and 80% are where most split bottles come from.

Do insulated jackets alone work?

They slow heat loss; they do not add heat. A jacket alone will carry a container through a short cold snap by extending the time constant, and will not save it through a sustained freeze. For anything that must stay liquid through a Pennsylvania January, pair a jacket with a thermostatically controlled band heater — the jacket makes the heater far cheaper to run.

What is the cheapest reliable answer?

Drain it. Genuinely — for site water, stormwater capture, irrigation supply and anything else that is not needed until spring, draining below about 10% and leaving the valve open is free, reliable and cannot fail. Heating and insulation are for containers whose contents must remain available.

Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade
FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.

Marking for a composite IBC approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly and carries a service life.
