Reading the frame

The pallet and the cage tell you more than the bottle does.

A bottle tells you what was in it. The cage and the base tell you where it has been, how it was handled, how many more years it has, and whether it is safe to stack. Learn to read them and you will never buy a bad tote again.

Short answer

IBC pallet bases come in steel, composite, plastic and wood. Steel is the most repairable and dominates reconditioned fleets; wood is unsuitable for wet service. Cage condition is judged at the welded nodes, not the tube faces — rust or cracking at a node means the container must not be stacked.

Grid patterns as a fingerprint

Composite IBC cages are built from horizontal and vertical tube runs welded into a lattice. Count the apertures on the long face and you learn quite a lot. A 54-aperture grid is the most common North American pattern. A 60 is typically a European build or a heavier-duty variant. A 72 is a tight-grid cage used where bottle bulge under head pressure must be controlled — dense chemistry, tall columns, elevated temperature.

For a buyer, the practical use of this is bottle compatibility. A replacement bottle is moulded to seat against a particular grid geometry; the wrong bottle in the right cage bulges through the apertures and abrades. When we rebottle, matching the grid pattern is the first thing we do and the reason we keep four bottle profiles on the shelf.

What a very old cage is worth

A 1990s cage in sound condition is not scrap — it is proven steel. Galvanising from that era is frequently heavier than current production, and a frame that has survived thirty years of forklifts without going out of square has demonstrated something a new frame has not. We rebottle those units happily. What we will not do is put them into UN-marked regulated service, because the marking belongs to a tested assembly with a service life, not to the steel.

Which IBC pallet base is best?

Steel for durability and repairability, composite for a balance of weight and corrosion resistance, plastic for wash-down and food environments, and wood for nothing at all in wet service. Steel bases dent and rust but can be straightened and recoated indefinitely, which is why they dominate reconditioned fleets. Plastic bases are lighter and hygienic but crack at the fork pockets and cannot be repaired.

Why does the cage grid pattern differ between totes?

Manufacturers use different tube spacing and node counts — commonly 54, 60 or 72 apertures on a 275 gallon frame. Tighter grids support the bottle better under head pressure and resist bulge; wider grids are lighter and cheaper. For reconditioning purposes, the pattern is also a fingerprint: it tells us the manufacturer, roughly the era, and which replacement bottle will seat correctly.

How do I inspect an IBC cage for damage?

Ignore the panels and look at the nodes — the welded intersections where the load actually travels. Surface rust on tube faces is cosmetic; rust blooming at a node, or a node with a visible crack in the weld bead, means the load path is compromised and the unit should not be stacked. Then sight down the four corner posts for bow, and check the base rails at the fork pockets, where forklift damage concentrates.

Can a damaged cage be repaired?

Usually. Bowed verticals go on a hydraulic straightening jig, surface rust is wire-wheeled and conversion-coated, and broken nodes can be re-welded by a certified welder where the geometry allows. What cannot be repaired economically is structural corrosion through the tube wall, or a frame that has been racked out of square by more than about an inch. Those cages go to a steel mill, which is itself a fully circular outcome.

Which base should I specify?

Steel for outdoor duty — it fails repairably. Composite for indoor warehouse duty, where it outperformed steel at 6%. Plastic for wash-down and food environments, accepting that the base is a fuse. Never wood in wet service.

How do I inspect a cage in four minutes?

Nodes first — welded intersections, all four corner columns, looking for rust bloom or a crack in the bead. Then sight down each vertical for bow, check the base rails at the fork pockets, measure diagonals for square, look at the bottle base radius for crazing, check the gasket, read the plate.

Can a bowed cage be straightened?

Usually. Bowed verticals go on a hydraulic jig and surface rust is wire-wheeled and conversion-coated. What cannot be repaired economically is corrosion through the tube wall, or a frame more than about an inch out of square.

Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
