Your asset, returned

Reconditioning: the repair your procurement system forgot exists.

Somewhere between 'it still works' and 'buy a new one' sits the option nobody costed — taking the container apart, fixing what is worn, and putting it back into service with its serial intact. It is cheaper than replacement, faster than procurement, and about 88 kg of CO₂e lighter per unit.

Short answer

IBC reconditioning restores containers you already own: wash, cage straightening, de-rusting, base replacement, new valve and gasket, leak test and UN re-marking where required. Typically $95–$175 per unit against $420–$560 to replace, with a 5–10 business day turnaround.

Scope a reconditioning run

Tell us the quantity, the previous contents and what's wrong with them. Photos of the worst units price the job fastest.

We reply in writing — this is where the quote lands.

US or Canadian number — (XXX) XXX-XXXX

We answer by email — we don't run a phone line, so every quote arrives in writing with photos, grades and freight already itemised.

On the line

Nine stations, forty minutes of hands-on time.

  1. 01

    Intake and serial capture

Every container photographed against its plate and logged to your account. Nothing is pooled with our own stock; your units come back as your units.

  2. 02

    Residue identification

Against your declaration and the SDS. This decides the wash cycle and whether the unit can stay in food-grade or regulated service.

  3. 03

    Wash

Cold triple-rinse, hot caustic, or degreasing cycle. Sugars and syrups get caustic; oils get degreasing; benign water-soluble products get rinse only.

  4. 04

    Bottle assessment

Clarity, odour, stress crazing, wall thickness at the base radius. Fail here and the unit routes to rebottling instead.

  5. 05

    Cage inspection

All four corner posts sighted for bow, every weld node examined for rust bloom or cracking, diagonals measured for square.

  6. 06

    Straighten and coat

Hydraulic jig for bowed verticals and racked frames. Wire-wheel and conversion coating on surface rust.

  7. 07

    Base decision

Steel bases repaired and recoated; cracked composite and plastic bases replaced; wood bases replaced with steel as standard.

  8. 08

    Fittings renewal

New 2" valve, new outlet gasket, new lid gasket, new fill lid. Torqued to spec, not to feel.

  9. 09

    Test, mark, document

Fill-and-hold leak test, UN re-marking where applicable, final photographs, and the record pack returned with the load.

Scope boundaries

What we do, and what we decline.

In scope

  • Cold rinse, hot caustic and degreasing wash cycles
  • Hydraulic cage straightening and squareness correction
  • Weld node repair by certified welder where geometry allows
  • De-rusting, conversion coating, recoating
  • Steel, composite and plastic base repair or replacement
  • Valve, lid and gasket renewal in EPDM or Viton
  • Fill-and-hold leak testing with retained record
  • UN 31HA1 re-marking on qualifying assemblies
  • Serial-matched photographic documentation

Declined, plainly

  • Structural corrosion through the cage tube wall
  • Frames racked more than ≈1" out of square
  • Bottles with through-wall stress cracking
  • Residues outside our permitted list — send the SDS first
  • Pesticide and biocide containers requiring specialist rinsate handling
  • Any request to re-mark a unit that has not genuinely passed
  • Converting an industrial-history tote into "food grade"

In the first three cases we will offer rebottling or buy the frame for salvage. In the rest, we will tell you which kind of processor you actually need, free of charge.

Reconditioning — FAQ

What does IBC reconditioning include?

Intake logging and photography, residue identification, the appropriate wash cycle, cage inspection at every weld node, hydraulic straightening where needed, de-rusting and conversion coating, base repair or replacement, new valve, lid and gasket, a fill-and-hold leak test, and re-marking where the unit returns to regulated service. You get the serial-matched photographs and the test record back with the containers.

Is reconditioning cheaper than buying replacement totes?

Usually, and often dramatically. A full recondition runs roughly $95–$175 per unit depending on scope, against $110–$225 to buy a comparable used tote and $420–$560 for new. It also keeps your serials, which matters if your fleet is tracked, and it avoids the embodied carbon of a replacement entirely.

Can you re-mark a tote to UN 31HA1?

Where the assembly qualifies, yes. Reconditioning for regulated service is a documented process: the cage must pass inspection, the bottle must be new or verified, the assembly must be tested, and the marking must reflect the reconditioning. We will not re-mark a unit that does not genuinely pass, and we will tell you exactly which criterion it failed.

What do you refuse to recondition?

Containers with structural corrosion through the cage tube wall, frames racked more than about an inch out of square, bottles with stress cracking through the wall, and any unit whose prior contents are outside our permitted residue list. In the first three cases we will offer to rebottle or to buy the frame for salvage; in the fourth we will tell you what kind of processor you need.

Received wisdom, examined

Four things people believe that are wrong.

Reconditioning is just a wash with a bigger invoice.

Nine stations: intake and serial capture, residue identification, wash, bottle assessment, cage inspection at every node, straightening and coating, base decision, fittings renewal, then test and documentation.

A reconditioned container cannot carry a UN marking.

It can, where the assembly genuinely qualifies and the work is documented as a reconditioning with an assembly test. What it cannot do is carry one because somebody swapped a bottle informally.

Serial retention is a nice-to-have.

If your fleet is asset-tagged or under a customer deposit scheme, re-tagging and reconciling a database after replacement routinely costs more than the entire price difference. It almost never appears in a purchase comparison.

You will just scrap anything marginal and charge me.

Failures are quarantined, photographed and reported with the criterion that failed and the options — usually rebottle, cage salvage or granulation with a scrap credit. Nothing is scrapped without asking.

Further questions

What does the record pack contain?

Serial-matched intake and outbound photographs, the declared prior contents, wash cycle with temperature and chemistry, cage inspection result, any repair performed, the fill-and-hold test result and, where applicable, the re-marking documentation.

Can you recondition a mixed fleet?

Routinely. Mixed sizes, mixed manufacturers, mixed grid patterns — we measure each cage rather than assuming, which is how we caught three European-spec frames in a 140-unit job last year that would otherwise have received the wrong bottle profile.

What is the minimum?

Six units for cage work, because the jig and coating booth have setup time. Washing and fittings work is one unit if you bring it to the yard.

Vocabulary, in twelve lines

IBC
Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade
FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.
UN 31HA1
Marking for a composite IBC approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly and carries a service life.
Regrind
Granulated recycled HDPE. Post-industrial IBC regrind goes to pipe, conduit, pallets — never food contact.
Avoided burden
Environmental cost that did not occur because a container was reused instead of manufactured. Not an offset.
