IBC TOTESPA

The best-value upgrade

New bottle. Veteran cage. Two thirds of the price.

Rebottling is the yard's answer to a question we get every week: I need a genuinely clean interior, but I refuse to pay for virgin steel I do not need. The cage does not care how many bottles it has held.

Short answer

A rebottled IBC tote is a brand-new HDPE bottle fitted into a reconditioned steel cage and pallet. You get an untouched interior at roughly 55–70% of a new tote's price and about 38% less embodied carbon, because the heaviest, most carbon-intensive component stays in service.

Why the cage is the part worth saving

Weigh a composite IBC and you find about 40 lb of HDPE and about 55 lb of steel. Price their manufacture in carbon and the split is roughly even — but price their lifespan and it is not close. The bottle is retired after a handful of fills, usually for haze, odour retention or environmental stress cracking. The cage is a welded tube-steel frame with a 15 to 25 year working life and nothing wearing on it but forklift drivers.

Throwing that cage away because the bottle is tired is the industrial equivalent of replacing a car because the tyres are bald. Rebottling fixes the consumable and keeps the capital.

What you actually receive

  • A new, never-filled HDPE bottle — food-grade FDA resin or industrial, your call.
  • A cage stripped, inspected at every weld node, straightened and de-rusted.
  • A sound steel or composite pallet base, replaced outright if marginal.
  • New 2" discharge valve, new EPDM or Viton gasket, new 6" fill lid.
  • Fill-and-hold leak test, and photographs against the assembly serial.
  • Re-marking to UN 31HA1 where the order calls for it.

On the line

What happens between your cage arriving and leaving.

Six stations, roughly forty minutes of hands-on time per container.

  1. 01

    Strip and log

Old bottle removed, serial and cage plate photographed and logged against your account. The bottle goes straight to the granulation line.

  2. 02

    Cage inspection

Every weld node checked for corrosion and fatigue, verticals checked for bow, base checked for rack damage. Failures are quarantined, not quietly shipped.

  3. 03

    Straighten and de-rust

Hydraulic straightening on the frame jig, wire-wheel and conversion coating on surface rust. Structural rust means the cage is scrapped to a mill.

  4. 04

    Pallet decision

Steel bases are repaired; composite and plastic bases are replaced if cracked. Wood bases are replaced outright — we do not sell wood into wet service.

  5. 05

    New bottle and fittings

Bottle seated, new valve, new gasket, new fill lid, torque-checked to spec rather than by feel.

  6. 06

    Test, mark, photograph

Fill-and-hold leak test, UN re-marking where required, serial photograph, stretch wrap, staged for freight.

Rebottling questions

The practical ones.

Rebottled totes — FAQ

Is a rebottled IBC tote as good as a new one?

For interior purity, identical — the bottle has never held anything. What differs is the cage and pallet, which have prior service life but are inspected, straightened, de-rusted and load-checked before the new bottle goes in. For the overwhelming majority of duties, including food contact with a food-grade bottle, a rebottled tote performs like new at 55–70% of the price.

Can a rebottled tote carry a UN marking?

Yes, when the rebottle is performed as a documented reconditioning and the assembly is re-marked accordingly. The marking belongs to the assembly, not the bottle alone, so the cage must pass inspection and the unit must be re-tested. Tell us at quote time if you need UN 31HA1 service and we will build and document it to that standard.

How much carbon does rebottling actually save?

Roughly 38% of a new container's cradle-to-gate burden, because the steel cage and pallet — about 25 kg of the assembly and the more carbon-intensive half of it — stay in service. In round numbers, about 33 kg of CO₂e saved per 275-gallon container versus buying new, before you count the landfill volume avoided.

What happens to the old bottle?

It is drained, cut, washed and granulated into clean HDPE regrind at our recycling line, then sold to processors making pipe, drainage, pallets and non-food packaging. Nothing about a rebottle sends plastic to a landfill.

Received wisdom, examined

Four things people believe that are wrong.

A rebottled tote is just a cleaned-up used one.

The bottle has never held anything. For interior purity it is identical to new; what differs is a cage that has proven itself over a decade and been inspected at every weld node.

Any bottle fits any cage.

Grid patterns differ — 54, 60 or 72 apertures. The wrong profile bulges through the openings and abrades against the tube edges, producing a leak eighteen months later that gets blamed on the bottle.

Rebottling voids a UN marking.

An informal bottle swap does. A documented reconditioning with an assembly test and re-marking does not — the marking belongs to the tested assembly.

It is cheaper to just buy used replacements.

Marginally, and only if serials do not matter. If your fleet is asset-tagged or under a deposit scheme, re-tagging and reconciling costs far more than the difference.

Further questions

What happens to my old bottles?

Drained, cut, washed and granulated into clean HDPE regrind on our own line, then sold to processors making pipe, conduit, pallets and crates. Weight tickets are available if your reporting needs them. Nothing about a rebottle produces landfill.

How do I know my grid pattern?

Count the apertures on the long face of the cage and send us a photograph. We measure rather than assume — on a 140-unit job last year, three cages looked like 54-aperture builds and were actually 60s.

Can you rebottle a cage that needs straightening?

Yes, and it is quoted separately at $40–$75. What we cannot rebottle is a frame more than about an inch out of square or one with structural corrosion through the tube wall; those go to a mill and we tell you which criterion failed.

Vocabulary, in twelve lines

IBC
Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade
FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.
UN 31HA1
Marking for a composite IBC approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly and carries a service life.
Regrind
Granulated recycled HDPE. Post-industrial IBC regrind goes to pipe, conduit, pallets — never food contact.
Avoided burden
Environmental cost that did not occur because a container was reused instead of manufactured. Not an offset.
