Reuse is not the environmentally-friendly option. It is the only one that changes anything.

Every environmental claim on this site is a subtraction from a manufacturing event that did not happen. That is the entire mechanism. No offsets, no credits, no tree planting — a container that already exists doing another decade of work instead of a new one being extruded to replace it.

The mechanism

Where the savings actually come from.

Not from anything we do. From something that does not get done.

A new 275-gallon composite IBC is about 18 kg of high-density polyethylene and 25 kg of welded tube steel, plus fittings, assembly and transport. Making that assembly means cracking naphtha, polymerising ethylene, blow-moulding a 40-pound bottle, smelting and rolling steel tube, galvanising it, welding a frame, and moving all of it around.

None of that happens when you buy a container that already exists. That is the whole trick, and it is why reuse dominates every other intervention available in this category. You cannot recycle your way to an avoided manufacturing event. You can only not need one.

What reuse actually costs

Honesty requires the other column. Returning a container to service consumes about 27 gallons of net water, a small amount of caustic or surfactant, a gasket, a valve, some electricity and a truck movement. Against 190 gallons of process water and 88 kg of CO₂e, the trade is roughly thirty to one in reuse's favour — but it is not free and we will not pretend it is.

Where reuse stops working

At the point where the container no longer performs. A hazed, odour-retentive bottle contaminating a product is not a saving; it is a loss with a green label on it. That is why grading exists, why we downgrade honestly, and why about 8% of our intake goes to granulation rather than back out the gate.

Received wisdom, examined

Four things people believe about container sustainability that are wrong.

“Plastic is the problem, steel is fine.”

In a composite IBC the steel carries slightly more embodied carbon than the plastic — 47.5 kg against 34.4 kg. It also lasts twenty times longer, which is precisely why rebottling makes sense and why scrapping a sound cage is the most wasteful thing you can do to one of these containers.

“Recycling closes the loop.”

It narrows it. Mixed post-industrial HDPE regrind cannot re-enter food-contact packaging, and each mechanical pass shortens the polymer chains slightly. Recycling is a genuinely good last resort and a poor first one.

“Washing uses more water than it saves.”

Net 27 gallons to wash, against 190 gallons of process water to manufacture the replacement. The ratio is roughly seven to one before you count carbon, energy or feedstock at all.

“Buying new is safer.”

Safer than an ungraded container, yes. Safer than a washed, leak-tested, documented Grade A with a known prior-contents record — no. The risk lives in the documentation, not in the age.

Are used IBC totes actually better for the environment?

Substantially, and the arithmetic is not close. Manufacturing a new 275 gallon composite IBC consumes roughly 88 kg of CO2e, 190 gallons of process water, 10 gallons of crude-oil feedstock and 420 kWh of primary energy. Reusing an existing container avoids all of that outright. Washing it costs about 27 gallons of net water and negligible carbon by comparison — roughly 14% of the water and under 3% of the carbon of building its replacement.

Isn't recycling just as good as reuse?

No. Granulating a container into regrind recovers about 34% of the embodied burden of its replacement; reusing it recovers essentially 100%. Recycling also degrades the material slightly each pass and consumes energy to transport, wash and granulate. The waste hierarchy puts reuse above recycling for good reason, and any supplier who leads with recycling is describing containers they chose not to reuse.

What about the water used to wash totes?

A hot caustic cycle uses about 45 gallons per container, and we reclaim roughly 18 of that as filtered pre-rinse on the next cycle, giving a net of about 27 gallons. That is real consumption and we publish it rather than hide it. It is also about one seventh of the 190 gallons of process water consumed making the replacement container you did not buy.

Can I count reused totes in my Scope 3 reporting?

In most frameworks, yes — under purchased goods and services, and under end-of-life treatment of sold products where you operate a return programme. What you can claim is the difference between the emissions factor of a new container and that of a reconditioned one, applied to the units actually purchased. What you cannot claim is a blanket offset. Our ESG reporting page is explicit about the boundary.

Washing uses more water than it saves.

What is the single biggest thing a customer can do?

Name an owner for an empty container on the day it becomes empty. Every accumulation we have ever cleared formed because a container arrived belonging to purchasing, was emptied by production, went outside because it was in the way, and at that moment belonged to nobody. It is one line in a procedure and it prevents the whole problem.

Does the freight cancel out the saving?

Not remotely. A collected container attracts roughly 0.6 kg of CO₂e per 100 miles on a backhaul leg, or 3.4 kg on a dedicated outbound, against 88 kg avoided. The truck is not the problem; the extruder is. We flag the backhaul attribution explicitly rather than burying it.

How do I know these numbers are not marketing?

Every coefficient is published on the Impact Ledger with its basis, and four of our five baseline choices work against our own figure. Substitute your own factors and redo the arithmetic — two customers have, and we adopted their reasoning for their reports.

What do you get wrong?

About 8% of what arrives cannot be saved, and some of that is our triage failing rather than the container being finished. We turn away pure scrap loads that then go to landfill because we have not found a way to take them that a business survives. And our steel emissions factor is a blended average because we do not know which mill made any given cage.

Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.

Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
