58 terms

The vocabulary, defined by people who use it daily.

Half the confusion in this trade is linguistic. Sellers and buyers use the same words to mean different things, discover it after the container is full, and blame each other. This glossary is our attempt to stop that happening on our side of a transaction.

Short answer

A working glossary of intermediate bulk container terminology — from aperture and buttress thread through food grade, rebottle, S60x6 and UN 31HA1 to wetted parts — written by graders at a working Pennsylvania yard.

Ask about a term

If a supplier used a word you cannot pin down, send it and we'll translate.

We reply in writing — this is where the quote lands.

US or Canadian number — (XXX) XXX-XXXX

5-digit US ZIP (19406) or Canadian code (A1A 1A1)

We answer by email — we don't run a phone line, so every quote arrives in writing with photos, grades and freight already itemised.

A

Aperture
One opening in the cage lattice. Counting apertures on the long face identifies the cage grid pattern — commonly 54, 60 or 72 — which in turn determines which replacement bottle profile will seat correctly.
Antistatic bottle
A bottle moulded with a conductive additive package so static charge cannot accumulate during filling and discharge. Required for flammable liquid service; it is a bottle specification and cannot be retrofitted.

B

Backhaul
Carrying freight on the return leg of a trip that would otherwise run empty. Because empty totes are light, backhauling them is close to free in weight terms, which is the economic basis of buy-back at distance.
Baffle
An internal partition that limits liquid movement in a partly filled container. Rare in composite IBCs; the usual answer to slosh is to fill or drain rather than baffle.
Bottle
The HDPE inner receptacle of a composite IBC. The consumable component — typically retired after three to eight fills for haze, odour retention or stress cracking.
Bulkhead fitting
A fitting passed through a container wall and sealed on both faces, usually with a reinforcing plate. How a bottom drain is added to a bottle that did not come with one.
Bund / bunded
Secondary containment around a container, sized to hold its contents in the event of failure. A spill pallet is a bund.
Buttress thread
An asymmetric thread form used on IBC outlets for strength under axial load. S60x6 and S100x8 are both buttress threads, and both crack if you put a wrench on them.

C

Cage
The welded tube-steel frame surrounding the bottle. Carries the load, takes the stacking force, and has a 15–25 year service life — twenty times that of the bottle inside it.
Camlock
A cam-and-groove quick-disconnect coupling. The fastest field connection for transfer hose; Type A and Type C are the common adapter pairings on IBC work.
CIP
Clean-in-place. Cleaning a vessel through fixed or inserted spray devices without dismantling it. Routine on stainless bins, limited on polyethylene because it cannot be steamed.
Composite IBC
An intermediate bulk container with a rigid plastic inner receptacle inside an outer metal cage. The 275 and 330 gallon containers this yard is built around.
Compression set
The permanent deformation an elastomer takes after being held under load. Why a year-old gasket weeps and why every resold container gets a new one.
Conversion coating
A chemical treatment applied to de-rusted steel to passivate the surface before recoating. Part of cage reconditioning.
Crazing
A network of fine surface cracks in polyethylene, usually from UV exposure or chemical attack. A precursor to through-wall stress cracking and a hard disqualifier for reuse.

D

Discharge valve
The outlet valve at the base of the container, standardly a 2-inch butterfly in polypropylene with an EPDM seat.
Downgrade
Reassigning a container to a lower grade after inspection. Ours are recorded with the reason, which is how a grading standard stays honest.
Dunnage
Material placed between stacked tiers to spread load. A sheet between two stacked totes transfers weight across the lower frame instead of concentrating it on four corner posts.

E

EPDM
Ethylene propylene diene monomer. The default gasket elastomer: good with water, dilute acids and bases, alcohols and glycols; poor with fuels, oils and aromatics.
ESCR
Environmental stress crack resistance. The property that determines how long a polyethylene bottle survives contact with surfactants and similar agents under stress.

F

Fertigation
Delivering liquid fertiliser through an irrigation system. One of the highest-volume agricultural uses of reused IBC totes.
Fill cap / fill lid
The closure over the top opening, standardly 6 inches, available vented or solid. A vented lid roughly doubles gravity discharge rate and prevents bottle collapse.
First-flush diverter
A device that discards the first and dirtiest portion of roof runoff before the remainder enters a rainwater tank. Non-optional on any harvesting system worth building.
Food grade
A container whose bottle is FDA-compliant HDPE, whose entire prior-contents history is edible commodities, and which has been washed to a documented procedure. All three conditions, together.
Footprint
The plan dimensions of the container base, standardly 48 × 40 inches — a GMA pallet footprint, which is why 275 and 330 gallon units rack and ship identically.
Four-way entry
A pallet base a forklift can enter from any of four sides. Standard on composite IBCs.
Freeboard
The empty volume above the fill line, allowing for thermal expansion and sloshing.

G

Galvanising
Zinc coating applied to the cage steel for corrosion resistance. Older cages frequently carry heavier galvanising than current production.
GHT
Garden hose thread, 3/4 inch. The most common domestic adapter from an S60x6 outlet, and severely flow-limiting at tote head pressures.
GMA pallet
The 48 × 40 inch pallet standard of the Grocery Manufacturers Association, and the reason every IBC in North America has the footprint it has.
Grade A / B / C
Trade shorthand for container condition, defined by each yard individually. There is no governing body. Ours are written down and printed on every quote.
Granulate
To grind washed plastic into flake and regrind for use as feedstock. The final loop in our circular model, applied to about 8% of intake.
Gross mass
The total weight of container plus contents. Most 275 gallon composite IBCs are rated to 2,800 lb maximum gross mass; most 330s to 3,300 lb.

H

HDPE
High-density polyethylene, resin identification code 2. The bottle material, and the most readily recycled commodity polymer in circulation.
Heel
The residual liquid remaining in a container after discharge. A heel is why a tote that looks empty still weighs more than tare, and why prior contents matter even after draining.

I

IBC
Intermediate bulk container. Anything between a drum and a tanker — in practice, 110 to 550 gallons on a forkliftable base.

L

Leak test
Filling to a test level and holding to confirm integrity. Performed per serial on every Grade A and B container leaving this yard.

M

Manway
A large access opening on a stainless bin, sized for internal inspection and cleaning.

N

Node
A welded intersection in the cage lattice, where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect a cage; rust bloom or cracking at a node means the container must not be stacked.
NPT
National pipe thread, tapered. Used for rigid plumbing connections; requires thread tape or paste and a wrench, unlike the buttress threads it adapts from.

P

Pallet base
The structural base of the container in steel, composite, plastic or wood. Wood is unsuitable for wet service and we replace it as a matter of course.
Passivation
Chemical treatment of stainless steel to restore the passive chromium oxide layer after welding or abrasion. Part of stainless bin refurbishment.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged at intake against the original label. The single most important fact about any used container, and the one most often not supplied.

R

Rebottle
To fit a new HDPE bottle into an existing inspected cage and pallet. Recovers a virgin interior while retaining the carbon-expensive steel.
Recondition
To restore a container to service through washing, cage repair, base repair, fittings renewal, testing and — where applicable — UN re-marking.
Regrind
Granulated recycled plastic, typically sold by the pound to processors. Post-industrial IBC regrind goes into pipe, conduit, pallets, crates and non-food packaging.
Rinsate
The liquid produced by rinsing a container. Collected, segregated by residue class and handled under permit; never discharged untreated.

S

S60x6
The standard IBC outlet thread: buttress form, 60 mm outside diameter, 6 mm pitch. Nearly every adapter on the market fits it.
S100x8
The legacy outlet thread at 100 mm outside diameter, found on older and some European containers. Bridged to S60x6 with a reducing bushing.
Specific gravity
The density of a liquid relative to water. Multiply gallons by 8.34 by specific gravity to get weight — the calculation people skip immediately before overloading a rack.
Stress cracking
Through-wall cracking of polyethylene under combined stress and chemical exposure. The dominant failure mode of an old bottle and an absolute disqualifier.

T

Tare
The empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275 gallon composite, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Tilt stand
A steel frame that tips a container toward its outlet for complete evacuation. Essential for slurries, sludges and anything that settles.
Triple rinse
Three successive fill-and-drain rinses, the baseline decontamination cycle for water-soluble benign residues.

U

UN 31HA1
The marking designation for a composite IBC with a rigid plastic inner receptacle in an outer steel cage, approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly, carries a service life, and can be re-applied after documented reconditioning.
Upcycle
To convert a retired container into a different useful object — a rain harvester, planter or wash stand — rather than granulating it. Recovers more value than recycling and less than reuse.

V

Viton
A fluoroelastomer gasket material for fuels, oils and aromatic hydrocarbons, where EPDM fails. Several times the cost and worth every cent in the right duty.

W

Wetted parts
Every component the product contacts: bottle, gasket, valve body, valve seat and any fitting. Compatibility must be assessed for all of them, not just the bottle.

Vocabulary, in twelve lines

IBC
Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade
FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.
UN 31HA1
Marking for a composite IBC approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly and carries a service life.
Regrind
Granulated recycled HDPE. Post-industrial IBC regrind goes to pipe, conduit, pallets — never food contact.
Avoided burden
Environmental cost that did not occur because a container was reused instead of manufactured. Not an offset.
