IBC totes for farms, orchards and growing operations

Farming runs on bulk liquid — nutrient concentrate, spray mix, livestock water, captured rain — and almost none of it needs a new container. Agriculture is where reused IBCs make the most obvious sense and where we ship the largest share of Grade B and C stock.

Fertigation and nutrient dosing

A 275 gallon tote on a stand with a 2-inch camlock and an inline venturi is the standard fertigation setup across most of southeastern Pennsylvania, and it works because the container is cheap enough to dedicate one per product. Dedicating totes per nutrient eliminates the cross-contamination problem entirely — no flushing between products, no precipitate from mixing incompatible concentrates, no guessing.

The practical advice we give every grower: buy one more tote than you think you need, label them with paint rather than tape, and never move a tote between a phosphate and a calcium product. The $130 you save by sharing a container will cost you a blocked drip line in July.

Spray mixing and orchard work

For spray mixing, the tote is a batching vessel rather than storage. What matters is a wide 6-inch fill opening for adding wettable powders, a bottom outlet that fully evacuates so the last gallon of concentrate does not sit in the base, and a cage you can strap to a trailer without deforming the bottle.

Our tilt stands and bottom-drain conversions exist largely because orchard operations kept asking for them. A tote that drains completely is a tote you can rinse properly, which matters more in spray work than in almost any other agricultural duty.

Water storage and rainwater capture

Pennsylvania has no restriction on rainwater harvesting and several counties actively encourage it through stormwater credits. One inch of rain on a 2,000 square foot barn roof yields roughly 1,250 gallons — about four and a half totes.

Capture systems need four things that people routinely skip: a first-flush diverter so the dirtiest runoff never enters the tank, mesh on every opening so you are not breeding mosquitoes, an opaque or covered bottle so you are not growing algae, and a drain-down plan for winter. Our harvesting builds include all four.

What we tell growers not to do

Do not store anything you intend to feed livestock in a container with an unknown prior-contents record. Do not use a tote that previously held a herbicide for anything else, ever — the absorption problem is real and no wash reverses it. Do not leave a full tote of water outside through a Pennsylvania winter without either heat, insulation or a drain-down, because a split bottle at 10 °F is not covered by anyone's warranty.

What you have to satisfy

The rules that actually bite in this sector.

Written in plain language rather than as a compliance checklist, because most of what goes wrong here is a misunderstanding rather than a violation.

  1. 01

    Containers holding anything that contacts an edible portion at or near harvest need a documented edible-only prior-contents history — the same standard as food grade.

  2. 02

    Livestock drinking water is held to the food-grade standard here. Animals are no less vulnerable to residual surfactants and agricultural chemistry than people are.

  3. 03

    Pesticide and herbicide containers are dedicated for life. Once a container holds a phenoxy herbicide it never holds anything else, and we will not buy it back for reuse.

  4. 04

    Rainwater harvesting is unrestricted for residential and agricultural use in Pennsylvania, and several counties offer stormwater credits for installed capacity.

  5. 05

    Keep the original product label attached. It is the provenance document, and a rain-damaged label costs a grade and roughly $40 a container at buy-back.

Expensive habits

Four mistakes we see repeatedly in this sector.

None of them are exotic. All four cost far more than the container decision that caused them.

Avoid

Sharing a container between incompatible concentrates

Calcium with phosphate or sulphate precipitates at concentration and blocks emitters. A residual heel of one to three gallons in the base is enough to do it. The second container costs $110–$165; a blocked drip line in July costs far more.

Avoid

Repurposing a herbicide container

Polyethylene absorbs, and absorption is not reversible by washing. A trace of a phenoxy herbicide desorbing into a fertigation line shows up as damage across a whole block, months later, with no obvious cause.

Leaving containers partly full over winter

A half-full container freezes a thick surface slab that expands outward into the sidewalls. Eighty-three percent of the freeze-split containers we buy back were between 20% and 80% full.

Buying Grade A for nutrient storage

Nutrient totes are dedicated per product and stain within one fill. Washed Grade B does the identical job for $55 less per container and is the correct specification.

Work down it before you ask anybody for a price, including us. It is the difference between a quote and a conversation.

  • List every product that needs its own dedicated container — one per product, not per nutrient class.
  • Identify which containers touch an edible portion or livestock water; those need food-grade stock with the record.
  • Decide fittings: 2-inch camlock for injector feeds, 3/4-inch GHT only where flow is already limited downstream.
  • Confirm stand height — 24 inches gives about 0.9 psi of useful head for venturi injection.
  • Check outdoor storage: opaque or covered bottles, or accept three to four times faster UV ageing.
  • Plan the winter drain-down before you buy, not in December.
  • Label in paint, not tape. Tape fails within a season and an unlabelled tote is a guessing game.
  • Ask us to hold spring stock for call-off release rather than storing forty containers yourself.

Can I use a used IBC tote for livestock water?

Only one with a documented edible prior-contents history — the same standard we apply to food-grade stock. Animals are no less vulnerable to residual surfactants and agricultural chemicals than people are, and in some cases more so. We segregate food-grade stock specifically so that farm customers have a defensible option for this.

What size tote is best for a farm?

275 gallon, almost always. It is one forklift or tractor-loader move, it fits on a standard flatbed trailer, and it is small enough to dedicate per product rather than sharing between them. The 330 makes sense for bulk water and for single-product storage where you genuinely consume 330 gallons before the material degrades.

How do I stop a tote freezing over winter in Pennsylvania?

In order of cost: drain it down, insulate it with a fitted jacket, or heat it with a thermostatically controlled band heater. A full uninsulated tote of water outdoors through a southeastern Pennsylvania January will freeze from the outside in and can split the bottle at the base radius. Partial fills are worse than full ones, because the ice has room to expand into the wall.

Do you deliver to farms?

Routinely, with a liftgate where there is no loader on site. Say so in the work order and freight gets quoted correctly the first time. February through May is our busiest agricultural period — order ahead of the spray season rather than during it.
