IBC totes for construction sites and contractors

A construction site is the least forgiving environment a container can live in — forklift traffic, mud, UV, freeze-thaw and no one whose job it is to look after it. It is also where Grade C stock earns its keep, because a $70 tote that gets abused for two seasons and then goes to our granulator is exactly the right economics.

Contractors use IBC totes for site water storage, dust suppression, concrete admixture, wash-out containment, mobile wash-down and temporary fuel-adjacent duty. Grade C as-is stock suits most of it; only potable-adjacent or regulated-fluid duty needs anything better.

Why Grade C is the right answer here

On a site, containers get dropped, dragged, driven into and left in the sun for eighteen months. Spending $200 a unit on Grade A stock for that environment is a category error. Grade C — visibly stained, honest about it, priced at $60 to $95 — does exactly the same job for water and suppression duty and costs a third as much when it inevitably gets damaged.

The economics only work if somebody takes them at the end, which is the other half of what we do. Site clearances are a standing part of our collection schedule, and a load of beaten Grade C totes still has real value to us as granulation feedstock.

Dust suppression and wash-out

Dust suppression is typically a tote on a skid with an engine-driven pump and a boom or hose reel. Our fabrication shop builds these regularly; the key details are a strainer on the outlet so grit does not destroy the pump, and a forkliftable skid, because nobody on a site is going to lift a bare tote carefully.

Concrete wash-out containment is the other common use, and it is a duty that ruins containers — high pH slurry, abrasive solids, and a cage full of hardened concrete if it sits. Buy Grade C, use it hard, and send it to us afterwards rather than leaving it behind the trailer.

What not to do on a site

Do not put diesel or gasoline in a polyethylene IBC. It is not rated for it, the gasket is wrong, the static behaviour is wrong, and it will not survive an inspection. Fuel goes in a steel bin on a bunded skid, which we also build.

Do not stack full totes on uneven ground, and do not stack them at all on a site where a machine operator might clip one. And do not let a full tote of water sit through a Pennsylvania January — either drain it or accept that you now own a split bottle.

What you have to satisfy

The rules that actually bite in this sector.

Written in plain language rather than as a compliance checklist, because most of what goes wrong here is a misunderstanding rather than a violation.

  1. 01

    Diesel, gasoline and DEF do not go in polyethylene IBCs. Fuel duty requires a steel or stainless bin on a bunded skid — we build those and we will not sell you the poly alternative.

  2. 02

    Concrete wash-out is high-pH and abrasive. Contain it in a dedicated Grade C container and send it to us afterwards rather than leaving it behind the trailer.

  3. 03

    Secondary containment applies to stored liquids on most sites. A two-tote spill pallet with a 66-gallon sump is the standard answer.

  4. 04

    Site water for dust suppression is non-potable. Do not let anyone drink from a suppression tote, and label them accordingly.

  5. 05

    Containers left behind at the end of a job become somebody's disposal liability. Book a clearance collection instead — we pay for the saleable ones.

Four mistakes we see repeatedly in this sector.

None of them are exotic. All four cost far more than the container decision that caused them.

Avoid

Buying Grade A for a demolition site

Containers get dropped, dragged and driven into. Grade C at $60–$95 does the identical job for water and suppression duty and costs a third when it inevitably gets damaged.

A pump with no strainer

Site water carries grit. An engine-driven pump without a 40-mesh strainer fails within a fortnight by scoring the impeller, and the pump always gets blamed.

Leaving containers behind at handover

They become the next contractor's problem and often a landfill charge. A clearance collection is almost always cheaper than a dumpster and we pay for what is saleable.

A pre-order checklist for this sector.

Work down it before you ask anybody for a price, including us. It is the difference between a quote and a conversation.

  • Buy the cheapest container that does the job — Grade C for water, suppression and wash-out.
  • Specify a forkliftable skid for anything with a pump on it. Bare totes get handled carelessly.
  • Fit a 40-mesh strainer between the outlet and any pump inlet. It costs $48 and it is the whole build.
  • Check secondary containment requirements before stored liquids arrive on site.
  • Label suppression and wash-out totes clearly as non-potable.
  • Plan the winter drain-down into the programme rather than discovering it in January.
  • Book the clearance collection when you plan demobilisation, not after the trailer has gone.
  • Keep fuel on steel. There is no version of this where poly is acceptable.

What is the cheapest IBC tote for construction water?

Grade C as-is stock, $60 to $95 per unit depending on quantity. It is visibly stained, sold with no pretence otherwise, and entirely adequate for non-potable site water, dust suppression and wash-out containment. Buying anything better for that duty is spending money on cosmetics.

Can I store diesel in an IBC tote?

Not in a standard polyethylene one. The bottle is not rated for it, the EPDM gasket will degrade, static accumulation is a genuine hazard, and it will fail an inspection. Fuel duty goes in a steel or stainless bin on a bunded skid — we build those, and we will not sell you the poly alternative for that job.

Will you collect totes from a site at the end of a job?

Yes, and it is one of the more satisfying parts of the week. Site clearances go into our standing collection schedule; we pay for what is saleable and take the rest for granulation. It is almost always cheaper than a dumpster and considerably better than leaving them behind the trailer for the next contractor.

How do I stop totes freezing on a winter site?

Drain them. On a site, insulation and heaters are unrealistic — they get damaged, unplugged or stolen. The reliable answer is to drain any water-filled container below about 20% before a hard freeze, and to keep de-icing brine moving rather than static. A partially full tote is more likely to split than a full one.

Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
