What a reuse programme can honestly claim — and what it cannot.

Sustainability claims fail assurance for one of two reasons: the data was not there, or the framing overreached. This page exists to solve both, by telling you exactly what our records support and exactly where the boundary sits.

Short answer

Container reuse reduces Scope 3 category 1 (purchased goods), category 5 (waste) and category 12 (end-of-life) through a lower emissions factor per container and diversion from landfill. It is an avoided emission within your inventory, not a tradeable offset. We supply serial-level records, diversion certificates and weight tickets to support it.

Per order · Avoided-burden calculation

Serial numbers, grades, routes, the coefficients applied and the resulting CO₂e, water, feedstock, energy and landfill figures. Issued with the invoice.

Per collection · Diversion record

Container counts by grade, routing decision for each, and outbound weight tickets for anything granulated or baled. Issued within ten business days of collection.

Per quarter · Fleet reuse report

Utilisation, fills, wash cycles, rebottles, retirements, replacements, and cumulative avoided burden with a stated baseline. For fleet-management customers.

Setting a defensible baseline

Every avoided-burden figure is a comparison, and comparisons live or die on the baseline. Ours is the manufacture of an equivalent new container — same capacity, same construction, cradle-to-gate — because that is what would genuinely have been purchased in the counterfactual. It is a conservative choice: a more generous baseline would include the landfill emissions of the displaced container as well, and we exclude them.

What we will not do is baseline against the worst available option in order to make our numbers larger. If your previous supplier was also selling reconditioned containers, your genuine saving from switching to us is close to zero, and we will say so.

Where the uncertainty is

Largest in the emissions factor for steel, which varies by roughly a factor of three between blast-furnace and electric-arc production, and we use a blended average. Second largest in freight, which depends entirely on distances we do not always control. Smallest in the polymer figures, which are well characterised. For a disclosure, we state these uncertainties rather than burying them.

Which Scope 3 categories does container reuse affect?

Primarily category 1, purchased goods and services, where a reconditioned container carries a materially lower emissions factor than a new one. Category 5, waste generated in operations, where containers diverted from landfill change the waste treatment profile. And category 12, end-of-life treatment of sold products, where you operate a return or deposit scheme. Category 4 upstream transport also moves, in both directions, depending on freight distances.

Can I claim an offset for reusing containers?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise. Reuse is an avoided emission within your own inventory boundary, not a credit you can sell or apply elsewhere. It reduces your reported footprint by lowering the emissions factor of what you purchase. That is a legitimate and well-established reduction. It is not an offset and should never be presented as one.

What documentation do you provide?

Per-order: an avoided-burden calculation against serial numbers, stating the coefficients used. Per-collection: a diversion record with container counts, grades and routing. Per-quarter for fleet customers: utilisation, fills, washes, rebottles, retirements and outbound weight tickets for granulated and baled material. All of it is designed to be handed to an assurance provider without further explanation.

Will this survive third-party assurance?

The data will. Our records are serial-level, timestamped and supported by weight tickets from the processors and mills that take our material. What determines whether a claim survives assurance is usually how it is framed in your own report — which is why we publish our coefficients and our boundary conditions rather than handing over a single impressive number.

IBC
Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade
FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.
UN 31HA1
Marking for a composite IBC approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly and carries a service life.
Regrind
Granulated recycled HDPE. Post-industrial IBC regrind goes to pipe, conduit, pallets — never food contact.
Avoided burden
Environmental cost that did not occur because a container was reused instead of manufactured. Not an offset.
