This company started because somebody was being paid to put forty perfectly sound steel cages into a hole in the ground, and that struck one person as an absurd thing to be doing on a Tuesday. Seventeen years later the argument has not changed and the evidence for it has only got stronger.
This is an attempt to state it as clearly as we can, once, on the anniversary of nothing in particular.
The argument, in one paragraph
Every environmental claim on this website is a subtraction from a manufacturing event that did not happen. That is the entire mechanism. Not offsets, not credits, not planting anything — a container that already exists doing another decade of work instead of a new one being extruded to replace it. The thing you avoid is the whole object: the naphtha cracked, the ethylene polymerised, the 40-pound bottle blown, the steel tube smelted, rolled, galvanised and welded, and all of it moved around.
Why recycling cannot match it
Because granulation recovers material and reuse recovers an object. Those are different quantities and the difference is most of the value.

Recycling is a genuinely good last resort. It is a poor first one, and an industry that leads with it is usually describing containers it could not be bothered to reuse.
Four things seventeen years has actually taught us
1. The obstacle was never technical
A composite IBC is, materially, one of the most recyclable and reusable large objects in industrial circulation. HDPE is the most valuable commodity polymer there is. Steel is infinitely recyclable. Nothing about the object is the problem.
The obstacle is that hauling a bulky, light, empty container to somewhere useful costs more than tipping it, unless somebody has built the routes, the yard and the grading discipline to make it worth doing. That is a logistics and organisation problem wearing an environmental costume.
2. Ownership is the failure mode
Every container accumulation we have ever cleared — and we cleared a 640-unit one in Bristol last summer — had the same structure. Nobody decided to stack containers against a fence. A container arrived full, belonging to purchasing. It was emptied by production. It went outside because it was in the way. And at that moment it belonged to nobody.
If you want one intervention that does more than any other, it is not a policy about recycling. It is naming an owner for an empty container on the day it becomes empty.
3. Honesty is a competitive advantage, slowly
Writing down the grading standard in 2012 cost us inventory immediately. Publishing our prices cost us margin. Publishing the coefficients behind the Impact Ledger gave customers the ability to argue with our numbers. Refusing 11% of offered loads costs us volume every year.
All of it has been worth it, on a timescale of years rather than quarters, because the alternative is a business where every transaction starts from a position of suspicion. We would rather compete on grading accurately and answering email quickly than on describing things vaguely.
4. The economics and the ecology agree, which is lucky
We are not a charity and this is not a moral argument. A used container costs a third of a new one because it does not have to be manufactured, and it emits nothing because it does not have to be manufactured. Those are the same sentence. Procurement and sustainability happen to want the same thing here, which is rarer than it should be.

What we still get wrong
Plenty. About 8% of what arrives here cannot be saved, and some of that is our own triage failing rather than the container being finished. We turn away pure scrap loads that then go to landfill, because we have not found a way to take them that a business can survive. We plumbed a nursery's rain bank wrong two summers ago. Our steel emissions factor is a blended average because we do not know which mill made any given cage, and that is the weakest number in our whole model.
We publish those because a reuse operation claiming perfection is either not measuring or not telling you.

You cannot recycle your way to an avoided manufacturing event. You can only not need one. Everything in this yard — the wash line, the rebottling bench, the granulator, the trucks, the seven-step triage, seventeen years of it — exists to make not needing one the easiest option on the table.
