In April a flavour and fragrance operation in northern New Jersey consolidated into another facility and forty-one 316L stainless bins became surplus. This is the kind of event that makes stainless available at all — nobody wears these out, they get displaced.
Why a flavour house means 316L
Flavour and fragrance work is the clearest case for stainless there is. The products are aromatic, frequently solvent-bearing, and the entire value of the material is in volatile compounds that would ghost into a polyethylene wall and reappear in the next batch.
316L specifically, rather than 304, because citrus oils and several common carriers are mildly aggressive and because chloride-bearing cleaning chemistries are routine. The molybdenum in 316L buys resistance that 304 does not have, and in a facility running hundreds of CIP cycles a year the difference shows.

The work
Passivation
Stainless resists corrosion because of a passive chromium oxide layer a few atoms thick. Welding, grinding and abrasion damage it, and free iron picked up from tooling sits on the surface and starts localised corrosion.
Passivation — a controlled acid treatment that removes free iron and lets the oxide layer re-form — is the single most important step in reconditioning a stainless bin. It is not cleaning, though it looks like cleaning. It is metallurgical maintenance and skipping it is why some reconditioned stainless develops rust spots that surprise everybody.
Gaskets and fittings
Every gasket replaced, no exceptions, and on this fleet in Viton because of the aromatic history. Tri-clamp seals, manway gasket, valve seats. It is a few hundred dollars per bin of parts on a unit worth several thousand and it is not a place to economise.
Dent removal
Eleven shells had dents from forklift contact. Most came out on a dolly with careful heat; three were left because the metal had work-hardened and pushing further risked thinning the wall. A cosmetic dent that does not affect volume or cleanability is a price adjustment, not a defect.
Pressure testing
Every bin, to its plate rating. Two failed — one at a manway flange that had been distorted by over-torquing at some point in its life, one at a weld in the base dish that showed a pinhole under pressure that was invisible dry.
The second one is exactly why you test. That bin looked perfect, passed visual inspection, and would have gone into service holding something valuable.
The carbon arithmetic, which is unusual for stainless
A 316L bin carries the highest embodied carbon per unit of anything we sell — very roughly 310 kg of CO₂e for a 350-gallon bin, against 88 kg for a composite IBC. On the face of it that looks bad.
Per fill, it is the lowest of anything we sell, because the denominator is enormous. A bin running forty fills a year for twenty-five years amortises its manufacture across a thousand uses. A poly bottle manages three to eight.

A reconditioned stainless bin is, by a wide margin, the lowest-carbon way to move a litre of liquid that we know of. It is also $2,400 rather than $140, which is why the honest answer to almost every enquiry is still a poly tote — but where the duty genuinely calls for metal, it is not a compromise on any axis.
Where they went
Thirty-nine bins: fourteen to two breweries, nine to a cosmetics manufacturer, eight to a specialty chemical operation, five to a distillery and three still on the ground. The two failures were stripped of fittings and sold as scrap stainless, which recycles infinitely with no downgrade at roughly a quarter of the energy of primary production.
Nothing about a stainless bin ever gets landfilled. The scrap value alone guarantees it, which is a rare case of the market and the environment agreeing without anyone having to be persuaded.
