Containers as assets

Stop buying totes. Start running a fleet.

Most companies that use bulk containers continuously are, without ever deciding to, operating a fleet badly — buying replacements for units that walked off, storing empties they cannot value, and reporting none of it. Serialise it and the same containers do twice the work.

Short answer

Fleet management turns your IBC containers into tracked, returnable assets: serialised tracking, scheduled collection and washing, call-off storage, rebottling cycles and a quarterly reuse report suitable for Scope 3 disclosure. Practical from about 50 containers upward.

Scope a fleet programme

Tell us roughly how many containers you cycle a year and where they go. We'll model the programme against what you spend now.

We reply in writing — this is where the quote lands.

US or Canadian number — (XXX) XXX-XXXX

5-digit US ZIP (19406) or Canadian code (A1A 1A1)

We answer by email — we don't run a phone line, so every quote arrives in writing with photos, grades and freight already itemised.

The programme

Six moving parts, one monthly number.

  1. 01

    Serialise

Every container in the fleet is captured against its manufacture plate, and asset-tagged where the fleet warrants it. Existing containers are absorbed; you do not start from zero.

  2. 02

    Call-off storage

We hold your stock in the Norristown yard and release against your schedule. You get volume pricing without sitting on forty containers or renting warehouse space.

  3. 03

    Scheduled collection

Empties leave your site on a standing route — often on the same truck bringing full stock in, which is close to free in freight terms.

  4. 04

    Wash and cycle

Containers run the appropriate wash cycle on return and re-enter the pool. Units that fail inspection route to rebottling or recycling automatically.

  5. 05

    Replace and retire

Fleet size held at your agreed number. Retirements are granulated with weight tickets; replacements come from reconditioned stock unless you specify otherwise.

  6. 06

    Report

A quarterly pack: utilisation, fills, washes, rebottles, retirements and calculated avoided burden. Written to be filed, not framed.

Fleet management — FAQ

What is IBC fleet management?

Treating your containers as tracked, returnable assets rather than disposable packaging. We serialise the fleet, hold stock for call-off, collect empties on a schedule, wash and recondition on a cycle, replace what fails, and report on utilisation and reuse every quarter. You stop buying containers and start renting a service that happens to involve containers.

What size fleet makes this worthwhile?

Around fifty containers is the practical floor — below that the administrative overhead outweighs the saving and you are better served by ad-hoc buy-back. Between fifty and five hundred is the sweet spot, where the loss rate on untracked containers is usually costing more than the programme does.

How do you track containers?

Serial capture at every touch — outbound, at your dock, on collection and through the wash line — against the manufacture plate and, where a fleet warrants it, an applied asset tag. That produces a per-container history: fills, washes, rebottles, repairs and current location. It is the same record that makes the quarterly reuse report defensible.

What does the quarterly report contain?

Container count and utilisation, total fills, wash cycles run, rebottles performed, units retired and recycled with weight tickets, and the calculated avoided burden — CO₂e, water, oil-equivalent and landfill airspace — against a new-container baseline. Sustainability teams file it against Scope 3 category 5 and category 12. See our ESG reporting page for exactly what is and is not claimable.

Further questions

What actually fixes the losses?

Serialising against the moulded manufacture plate rather than an applied tag, stencilling a returnable-container panel with an email address, stating returnability on delivery paperwork, quarterly reconciliation rather than annual, and standing collection routes for the sites that generate most empties.

What is in the quarterly report?

Container count and utilisation, total fills, wash cycles run, rebottles performed, units retired and recycled with weight tickets, and the calculated avoided burden against a new-container baseline. Sustainability teams file it against Scope 3 categories 1, 5 and 12.

Is it worth it below fifty containers?

Usually not. The administrative overhead outweighs the saving and you are better served by ad-hoc buy-back plus a standing collection date. Between fifty and five hundred is where the loss rate on untracked containers reliably exceeds the programme cost.

Vocabulary, in twelve lines

IBC
Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade
FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.
UN 31HA1
Marking for a composite IBC approved for liquids. Belongs to the assembly and carries a service life.
Regrind
Granulated recycled HDPE. Post-industrial IBC regrind goes to pipe, conduit, pallets — never food contact.
Avoided burden
Environmental cost that did not occur because a container was reused instead of manufactured. Not an offset.
