IBC totes for breweries, cideries and craft distillers

Craft brewing runs on more bulk liquid than the taproom suggests: glycol, caustic, peracetic acid, treated water, wort, cider must and several tonnes of spent grain slurry a week. Some of it belongs in poly and some of it absolutely does not, and knowing which is most of the value we add here.

Short answer

Breweries and distilleries use IBC totes for glycol loops, caustic and PAA storage, treated brewing water, spent grain slurry and cider must. Product-contact duty at temperature or with aromatics belongs in stainless; utility duty belongs in washed poly totes at a fraction of the cost.

Brewing & Distilling

Utility duty lives indoors — glycol, caustic and peracetic acid, dedicated and labelled

Where poly is perfectly fine

Glycol is the classic case. A brewery glycol loop needs a top-up and drain-down reservoir, it never touches product, and it sits at ambient temperature. A washed Grade B tote with a Viton gasket does that job for $140 and lasts a decade. Buying stainless for it is money set on fire.

The same goes for caustic storage, peracetic acid, treated brewing liquor held between batches, and water for the hose reel. Utility duty is where reused totes pay for themselves fastest in this industry.

Where poly is the wrong answer

Hot wort. Anything aromatic — hop extracts, botanicals, flavouring essences. Anything spirituous above about 20% ABV, which will attack a polyethylene wall over time and pick up a plastic note that no amount of blending hides. And anything that needs to be steamed or CIP-validated between products.

For all of that, a reconditioned 304 or 316L stainless bin at a third of new price is the right purchase. We buy displaced brewery fleets specifically so we can offer them.

Spent grain and the slurry problem

Spent grain slurry is heavy, abrasive, acidic as it sours and it settles hard. A standard bottom outlet leaves a wedge of grain in the base that goes anaerobic within a day and makes the container unpleasant in ways that linger.

The fix is a bottom-drain conversion with a tilt stand, which fully evacuates and rinses in one operation. If the grain is going to a farm as livestock feed, the container also needs a food-grade prior history — the same rule as any other feed application.

What you have to satisfy

The rules that actually bite in this sector.

Written in plain language rather than as a compliance checklist, because most of what goes wrong here is a misunderstanding rather than a violation.

  1. 01

    Spent grain destined for livestock feed is a feed application: the container needs a documented edible-only prior-contents history, exactly like any other food use.

  2. 02

    Neutral spirit and distillate above roughly 20% ABV belongs in stainless. Ethanol swells and crazes polyethylene and imparts a plastic note long before structural failure.

  3. 03

    Hot wort should not go into polyethylene — temperature accelerates both extraction from the wall and the polymer's own creep.

  4. 04

    Caustic and peracetic acid totes are dedicated permanently and labelled in paint. A sanitiser tote reused for anything else is a genuine problem.

  5. 05

    Glycol loops frequently carry corrosion-inhibitor packages with hydrocarbon character; specify Viton gaskets rather than EPDM.

Expensive habits

Four mistakes we see repeatedly in this sector.

None of them are exotic. All four cost far more than the container decision that caused them.

Avoid

Buying stainless for a glycol reservoir

Ambient temperature, no product contact, non-aggressive fluid. A washed Grade B tote with a Viton gasket does it for $140 against $2,400 — and we will tell you so even though it costs us the sale.

Avoid

Putting spirit in polyethylene

Above about 20% ABV ethanol slowly swells and crazes the wall and the product picks up a plastic character. This is a stainless duty and there is no economical shortcut.

Avoid

A standard outlet on a spent grain tote

Grain solids compact into a wedge above the outlet that gravity cannot reach and spray heads cannot see. It sours within a day. A bottom drain and tilt stand fixes it permanently.

Sharing a tote between caustic and PAA

Dedicate and label in paint. This is a safety issue rather than a quality one, and it is the only mistake on this list that can hurt somebody.

A pre-order checklist for this sector.

Work down it before you ask anybody for a price, including us. It is the difference between a quote and a conversation.

  • Split the fleet into utility duty and product-contact duty before you price anything.
  • Utility — glycol, caustic, PAA, treated liquor — is washed Grade B with the correct elastomer.
  • Product contact at temperature, aromatic or spirituous is stainless. Do not economise here.
  • Spent grain going to feed needs food-grade stock plus a bottom-drain conversion.
  • Specify Viton for glycol and anything hydrocarbon-bearing; EPDM for caustic, PAA and water.
  • Dedicate and paint-label every sanitiser and caustic container.
  • Ask about a standing swap: full stock in, empties out, on the same truck movement.
  • Check cellar headroom before ordering 330s — two stacked is 106 inches plus beam.

Can I store beer or wort in an IBC tote?

Cool, short-residence, non-packaged transfers in a food-grade poly tote are done routinely — cider must and unfermented juice especially. Hot wort should not go into polyethylene: temperature accelerates both extraction from the wall and the plastic's own creep. Anything packaged, aged or aromatic belongs in stainless.

What do breweries actually buy from you most?

Glycol reservoirs and caustic storage, by a wide margin. Then spent grain totes with bottom-drain conversions, then treated-water storage for brewhouses without enough hot liquor tank capacity. Stainless bins are a smaller number of units and a larger share of revenue.

Will spirits damage a poly tote?

Above roughly 20% ABV, ethanol will slowly swell and craze polyethylene, and the container will impart a detectable plastic character long before it fails structurally. Neutral spirit, high-proof distillate and botanical macerations all belong in stainless. Below 20%, short-residence poly storage is generally acceptable with a food-grade bottle.

Do you take our empty glycol and caustic totes back?

Yes, under buy-back. Glycol and caustic residues are both on our permitted list, and clean cage-square totes from a brewery are usually near the top of our payment band. Several regional breweries run a standing swap with us — full stock in, empties out, on the same truck.

Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
Rebottle
A new HDPE bottle fitted into an inspected existing cage — virgin interior, 38% less embodied carbon than new.
Food grade
FDA-compliant resin plus an edible-only prior history plus a documented wash. All three, together.
