Food manufacturing is the industry where the prior-contents record stops being paperwork and starts being the product. We segregate food-grade stock physically, wash it to a documented procedure, and sell it with the record attached — or we sell it as industrial and price it accordingly.

Food-grade stock: compliant resin, an edible-only history and a documented wash

Prior contents matching

The best practice in food work is not simply buying food grade — it is matching the prior product family to the intended one. A tote that held corn syrup and now holds a fruit concentrate is an easy wash and a low-risk carry-over. A tote that held vinegar and now holds a delicate dairy base is a harder ask, even though both prior contents are perfectly edible.

We will tell you what each unit previously held and let you make that call, because you know your product and your allergen matrix better than we do. What we will not do is sell you a generic 'food grade' tote without telling you what was in it.

Allergens and the rebottling answer

Allergen carry-over is the one risk that documentation cannot fully retire. If your product line is allergen-controlled — tree nut, dairy, egg, soy — the defensible answer is a rebottled tote with a new, never-filled food-grade bottle on a reconditioned cage. You get a virgin interior with no prior history at all, at roughly two thirds the price of a new unit.

That is the single most common recommendation we make to food customers, and it surprises people who assumed their only options were new or risky.

Cleaning between products

Sugars and syrups need hot caustic at 140–160 °F with a rotating spray head; residual sugar films are the most common cause of a tote that smells fine and fails a swab. Proteins need caustic and a sanitising rinse. Oils need a degreasing cycle — a hot water rinse alone leaves a film that will go rancid.

What you have to satisfy

The rules that actually bite in this sector.

Written in plain language rather than as a compliance checklist, because most of what goes wrong here is a misunderstanding rather than a violation.

  1. 01

    All three conditions must hold together: FDA-compliant HDPE bottle, an edible-only prior-contents history, and a documented wash with the record retained.

  2. 02

    Washing cannot upgrade an industrial container to food grade. Polyethylene absorbs organic compounds into the wall and desorbs them over months.

  3. 03

    There is no third-party certification of individual used containers. What exists is documentation — resin compliance statement, intake prior-contents log, wash record.

  4. 04

    For allergen-controlled lines, a rebottled container with a new food-grade bottle removes the carry-over argument entirely, at roughly two thirds of new price.

  5. 05

    We decline used stock for infant nutrition, pharmaceutical intermediates and regulated potable municipal supply, and quote new instead.

None of them are exotic. All four cost far more than the container decision that caused them.

Treating 'food grade' as a cleaning result

It is a chain of custody, not a finish. A spotless container that once held a surfactant is Grade A and will never be food grade, and no wash cycle changes that.

A vinegar tote into a delicate dairy base is legal and a quality risk. Ask what the specific prior product was, not just whether it was edible.

An EPDM gasket takes a compression set within a year and weeps. It is four dollars. Every wash and every change of custody is a gasket event.

Heat sets protein soils and caramelises sugar films. Four minutes saved turns a straightforward hot caustic cycle into a two-pass job.

Work down it before you ask anybody for a price, including us. It is the difference between a quote and a conversation.

  • Confirm the specific prior product, in writing, for every container — not just that it was edible.
  • Check the prior product against your allergen matrix before the container arrives.
  • For allergen-controlled or flavour-sensitive lines, specify rebottled units with new food-grade bottles.
  • Specify FDA-grade EPDM gaskets and confirm they are new on arrival.
  • Agree who performs the wash and who retains the record — us, or you.
  • Plan a sanitising rinse and air dry immediately before first fill, regardless of who washed it.
  • Check specific gravity: syrups at 1.33 SG exceed the rated gross mass of a full 275-gallon container.
  • Order food-grade stock in January. It is the one category where waiting genuinely costs you availability.

Can a used IBC tote be certified food grade?

It can be sold as food grade when three conditions hold together: the bottle is FDA-compliant HDPE, the entire prior-contents history is edible commodities, and it has been washed to a documented procedure with the record retained. What cannot happen is an industrial tote being upgraded into food-grade status by washing. Polyethylene absorbs, and absorption is not reversible.

Do you supply wash and prior-contents documentation?

As standard with every food-grade unit: declared prior product, wash cycle, temperature, detergent and sanitiser where used, date, operator and post-wash photographs against the serial. That pack is what makes the container defensible in a food-safety audit.

What about allergens?

For allergen-controlled lines we recommend rebottled units with new food-grade bottles rather than any used bottle, regardless of its prior product. A virgin interior has no history to document and no carry-over to argue about, and it costs roughly two thirds of a new container.

Are food-grade totes always more expensive?

Yes — typically $225 to $300 against $110 to $165 for washed industrial stock. The premium reflects scarcity and segregation: only a fraction of incoming containers have a clean documented edible history, and keeping them physically separated in the yard costs us space and discipline.

Intermediate bulk container — anything between a drum and a tanker, in practice 110–550 gallons on a forkliftable base.
Composite IBC
An HDPE bottle inside a welded steel cage on a pallet base. The 275 and 330 gallon workhorses.
Tare
Empty weight of the container: 125–135 lb for a 275, 140–155 lb for a 330.
Gross mass
Container plus contents. Most 275s are rated to 2,800 lb; exceed it and the bottle bulges rather than bursts.
Node
A welded intersection in the cage where load actually transfers. The correct place to inspect.
S60x6
The standard outlet thread: 60 mm OD, 6 mm pitch buttress. Hand tight only.
Prior contents
What the container last held, logged against the original label. The single most consequential fact about any used tote.
