Here is a question we ask new customers who have containers piling up behind a building: what do you think it costs to make those disappear? The answer is almost always a disposal figure, because that is the only quote anyone has ever given them. Very few people have been told that the same truck movement can run in the other direction and end with money coming toward them.
The reason is arithmetic that nobody outside freight has cause to think about, so let us do it in public.
Full containers are a weight problem
A 53-foot dry van has room for 48 IBC totes stacked two high. It will never carry 48 full ones. Forty-eight totes of water is 116,400 lb, which is roughly three times a legal payload. In practice a van of full 275-gallon water totes carries seventeen, and the remaining 31 pallet positions sit empty because weight ran out first.

Read the last row carefully, because it is the whole business model. A truck that brings you full stock has already been paid for on the outbound leg. On the way home it is empty — an asset burning fuel to move air. Filling it with 96 of your empty containers adds about 12,500 lb to a trailer with 60,000 lb of unused capacity. The marginal freight cost of those containers is close to nothing.
What that buys, in practice
It buys radius. Our standard collection radius is about 150 miles from Norristown, which on paper looks generous for a business that pays $15 to $85 a container. It is only generous if you think of the trip as being for the empties. It is not: the trip is for the delivery, and the empties ride home in space that was going to be wasted.
- I-95 South to Wilmington and Baltimore: twice weekly, full stock down, empties back.
- I-76 West to Reading and Harrisburg: twice weekly, and the most balanced corridor we run.
- PA Turnpike NE to Allentown and Bethlehem: weekly, heavily skewed toward collection.
- US-30 West to Lancaster: weekly, heavily skewed toward delivery between February and May.
Why drop trailers changed the maths again
The version of this that works best is a drop trailer: we leave a 53-footer at a site that generates empties continuously, come back when it is full, and swap it. The customer loads at their own pace with their own forklift, we make one movement instead of six, and nobody spends an afternoon waiting on a dock.
It only works above a certain volume — realistically, a site producing forty or more empties a month — but at that volume it is dramatically cheaper for both sides. It also improves grade, because containers go into a trailer rather than standing in the weather for a quarter, and a container that has not held three inches of rainwater through a Pennsylvania January grades a full step higher.
The part that is not about money
There is an environmental version of this arithmetic too, and it is unusually flattering. Because the empties ride on a leg that was running anyway, the freight emissions attributable to collecting a container are roughly 0.6 kg of CO₂e per 100 miles, against 3.4 kg for a full container on a dedicated outbound. Against the 88 kg avoided by not manufacturing a replacement, the collection leg is noise.
We say that carefully, because attribution in freight accounting is genuinely arguable and we would rather flag the assumption than smuggle it past you. But under any reasonable method, the transport cost of reuse is small compared with the manufacturing cost of replacement. The truck is not the problem. The extruder is.
