Somebody sends us a photograph most weeks with the same question attached: the bottle looks cloudy, is that a problem? The honest answer is that we cannot tell from the photograph, and neither can they, because three completely different conditions look identical at arm's length and only one of them matters.
This is the post we now send instead of typing the explanation again.
1. UV haze — cosmetic, and the most common
Natural HDPE is translucent when new. Ultraviolet light breaks polymer chains at the surface and scatters light, and the wall gradually goes from translucent to milky. It happens uniformly across whatever surfaces faced the sky, it is usually worse on the top third, and it does not weaken the container in any way that matters at the hazing stage.
How to identify it: hold a light behind the wall. UV haze diffuses the light evenly, like frosted glass. There is no texture to it — run a fingernail across and it is smooth. And it will be worse on the side that faced south, which is a genuinely useful tell.
2. Residue film — removable, and the most misjudged
Sugar films, protein soils, oil residues and latex skins all leave a cloudiness that sits on the inner surface rather than in the wall. People routinely mistake it for permanent damage, condemn a perfectly good container, and pay for a replacement. It is the most expensive misdiagnosis in this trade.
How to identify it: the cloudiness is uneven. It pools at the base, streaks down the walls, and frequently stops in a tide line at whatever level the last fill sat. Backlit, it is patchy rather than uniform. And crucially, it is on one side of the wall only — look at the outer surface in the same spot and it is clear.

3. Stress crazing — structural, and the one that matters
Environmental stress cracking is what eventually kills an HDPE bottle. Under combined mechanical stress and chemical exposure, micro-cracks form and propagate. Before they become a leak they show as crazing: a fine network of short cracks, usually radiating, usually concentrated at the base radius where hoop stress is highest.
How to identify it: texture. Crazing has a direction and an edge. Backlit, it looks like a spider web rather than a fog. Run a fingernail lightly across it and you will feel it catch. Flex the wall gently and the network will open and close visibly, which is the single most reliable test there is.
- Look at the base radius first, on all four faces. This is where 80% of crazing we see begins.
- Backlight the wall with a torch from the inside if you can get one in through the fill neck.
- Feel for texture. Fog is smooth; crazing catches.
- Flex and watch. Opening and closing means propagating cracks, and the container is finished as a liquid vessel.
A crazed bottle does not get washed, sold, rebottled into or argued about. It goes to the granulation line and its cage goes onto the rebottling bench, where it will very likely outlive several more bottles. That is the correct outcome and it is not a loss.
The reason this is worth learning
Because the three conditions have wildly different consequences and identical first impressions. We have watched customers reject a stack of hazed Grade B containers and buy new ones, and we have watched other people buy visibly crazed containers off a classified advert because the price was good. Both mistakes come from the same place: treating cloudiness as a single thing.
Learn to tell them apart and you can buy confidently from photographs, argue intelligently with a seller, and stop replacing containers that had most of their life ahead of them.
