Drive south-west out of West Chester on Route 1 and after twenty minutes you are in the middle of an industry that most Pennsylvanians know about and almost nobody has seen: roughly half of the mushrooms grown in the United States come from a fifteen-mile radius around Kennett Square.
We have supplied growers there since about 2016, and it took us most of the first two years to understand why our containers were coming back in the condition they were.
The humidity problem
A mushroom growing room runs at 85 to 95% relative humidity, often at 60 to 70 °F, continuously. That is a superb environment for fruiting bodies and a hostile one for galvanised tube steel.
Containers that live in that environment corrode at several times the rate of the same container in a warehouse. And it concentrates, exactly as you would expect, at the welded nodes where the galvanising is thinnest.

A third of containers coming out of growing-room service have a cage we cannot save, against 4% out of dry warehouse service. That is not a container quality problem; it is an environment, and once you know it you can specify around it.
What we recommend there now
- Buy Grade C for anything living permanently in a growing room. The cage is a consumable in that environment and you should not be paying Grade A prices for a three-year life.
- Keep the good containers out. Supplement dosing and pasteurisation make-up can be done from containers kept in the corridor or the prep area, feeding in by hose, rather than parked in the humidity.
- Plastic pallet bases where you can. They do not rust, they wash down well, and in a wet environment their inability to be repaired matters less because the cage will fail first anyway.
- Sell them back early. A container pulled from growing-room service at three years still has a rebottlable cage in most cases. At five years it usually does not. Growers who cycle containers out early get meaningfully more back.
The four duties
Supplement dosing
Nutritional supplements go into substrate at spawning. These are dosed from containers in the prep area, usually with a 2-inch camlock to a metering pump. Grade B, dedicated per product, and the same cross-contamination discipline as fertigation applies.
Casing-layer water
Casing needs consistent moisture and the water quality matters. Growers running municipal water with variable chlorine sometimes hold and off-gas it in containers first. Food-grade stock here, because it is going onto a crop that people eat and the water contacts the casing directly.
Pasteurisation make-up
Phase II pasteurisation needs steam and water. Make-up water storage is straightforward Grade B duty, and this is the container that can live in the humid zone because it is cheap and replaceable.
Post-harvest wash-down
Sanitiser solution, usually a dilute hypochlorite or peracetic acid. Grade B with EPDM gaskets, dedicated permanently and labelled in paint, because a sanitiser tote that gets reused for anything else is a problem.
A note on the compost side
Spent mushroom substrate is a significant regional by-product and several operations move liquid amendments in containers as part of handling it. That duty is genuinely abusive — high organic load, low pH swings, abrasive solids — and it is where we send Grade C stock with bottom-drain conversions and no illusions about longevity.
We buy those back too, at the bottom of the band, and most of them go to the granulator. It is the right place for them to end up and it beats the alternative, which for years was a pile behind a building.
