Every February we have roughly the same conversation with growers across Lancaster and Chester counties. They need containers for the coming season, they are counting carefully, and somewhere in the conversation is the question of whether they can get away with one fewer by sharing a tank between two products.
The answer is almost always no, and the reason is chemistry rather than hygiene.
The precipitation problem
Concentrated nutrient solutions are stable individually and frequently not stable together. The classic incompatibility is calcium with phosphate or sulphate: mix concentrated calcium nitrate with a concentrated phosphate feed and you get calcium phosphate, which is a fine white solid with an enthusiasm for emitter orifices.
In a properly designed injection system the two never meet at concentration — they meet in the irrigation line, diluted, where they stay in solution. But a shared storage tote defeats that design entirely. A residual heel of one concentrate in the bottom of the container, topped up with the other, is exactly the concentrated mixing you spent money to avoid.

Why a rinse does not solve it
Two reasons. The first is practical: nobody genuinely rinses a 275-gallon container between products in the middle of a season. There is no time, there is often nowhere to put the rinsate, and it does not happen.
The second is that the heel is larger than people think. A composite IBC with a standard 2-inch butterfly outlet retains between one and three gallons in the base after gravity discharge, more if the floor is not level. Three gallons of concentrated calcium nitrate is a meaningful dose of calcium into whatever you fill next.
How to set it up properly
- One container per product. Not per nutrient class, per product. If you switch suppliers mid-season, that is a new product and it gets a rinse before the changeover.
- Label with paint, not tape. Tape fails in weather within a season and an unlabelled nutrient tote is a Grade C container the day you sell it and a guessing game before then.
- Dedicate permanently. Once a container has held a phosphate feed, it is the phosphate tote for the rest of its life. Write it on the cage.
- Fit a proper outlet. A 2-inch camlock feeding an injector is the standard; a garden hose thread chokes flow badly and encourages people to run injectors outside their design range.
- Elevate. A tote on a 24-inch stand gives about 0.9 psi of head, which matters for venturi injectors and makes full evacuation possible.
- Keep them out of the sun. Nutrient solutions grow algae in a translucent container, and algae blocks the same emitters the precipitate would have.
Grade selection for nutrient storage
Washed Grade B is correct and Grade A is a waste of money, with one exception. If the container feeds a hydroponic system where the solution contacts the root zone of an edible leaf crop, buy food-grade stock with documented edible prior contents. Everything else — field fertigation, orchard spray mixing, row crop injection — is comfortably Grade B duty.
What matters far more than grade is the prior-contents record. Never put a nutrient concentrate into a container that previously held an unknown product, and never, under any circumstances, repurpose a container that has held a herbicide. Polyethylene absorbs, the absorption is not reversible by washing, and a trace of a phenoxy herbicide desorbing into your fertigation line will show up as damage across a whole block.
One more thing, about winter
Drain nutrient totes below 10% before a hard freeze, or fill them. The partly filled container is the one that splits, and a split nutrient tote in February is both a container loss and a spill on your own ground.
