In March we delivered twenty 330-gallon containers to a distributor in Bucks County who had worked out, correctly, that a 330 gives 20% more product per pallet position than a 275 for the same footprint. It is a good insight and it is why the size exists.
What nobody checked — not them, and to our discredit not us either — was the clear opening of their racking. The containers arrived, went onto the floor, and stayed there because a two-high stack of 330s did not fit in a beam opening built for 275s.

The customer's beam openings were 96 inches. That is an extremely common number in warehouses built around bulk liquid storage, because it is exactly what a double-stacked 275 needs and not an inch more. It accepted 275s perfectly for eleven years, which is precisely why nobody thought to measure.
The other two constraints people miss
Box truck door headers
A typical 26-foot box truck has a door header around 90 inches. A single 330 on a pallet jack, with the jack lifting it three inches, is 56 inches and passes comfortably. The same container on a liftgate, being walked up by someone who does not know it is 53 inches rather than 46, has caught the header more than once. It is not a dramatic failure; it is a container that comes back on the truck.
Gravity feed geometry
Seven extra inches of head is mostly a benefit — it improves flow rate and helps venturi injectors. But the outlet also sits seven inches higher off the floor. If you feed a dosing skid, a catch tank or a drum-fill station at a fixed height, check that the geometry still lines up. We have seen a 330 that emptied beautifully into thin air twelve inches above the inlet it was supposed to reach.
What actually happened
We took eight of the twenty back and swapped them for 275s at no cost, because it was as much our error as theirs — we know this trap exists and we did not ask. The other twelve went onto the floor in a single-stacked row, where they work fine and give the customer their 20% volume advantage per position without needing the rack at all.
The interesting outcome is that the floor arrangement turned out to be better for them. They pull from those containers daily, and a single-stacked row is faster to access than a racked pair where the top one has to be lifted down. The 330s went where the throughput was and the 275s stayed in the rack as buffer stock.
The rule we added to our own process
Any quote for 330-gallon containers now carries a line asking the customer to confirm the rack opening and the delivery vehicle door height. It has caught four more of these since March. It is a slightly tedious question and it is cheaper than a return load.
And the thing we say to anybody weighing 275 against 330: the freight advantage you think you are getting mostly is not there, because trailers are weight-limited on full containers and a van of 330s carries about the same total gallons as a van of 275s. The real advantage of a 330 is on your own site — 16% fewer lifts, connections and changeovers per 10,000 gallons processed. Buy it for handling, not for shipping, and measure your ceiling first.
