If you asked me which component causes the most spilled product in this industry, you would probably guess the bottle or the valve. It is neither. It is a flat elastomer ring that costs about four dollars, that nobody thinks about, and that fails quietly at three in the morning rather than dramatically in daylight.
We logged 209 gasket-related failures across our own intake and our service work last year. Here is what they were.

1. Compression set — the silent one
An elastomer held under compression gradually stops springing back. After a year under a valve flange, an EPDM gasket has taken a permanent impression of that flange and lost some of the elasticity that made it seal. It does not fail suddenly; it begins to weep, usually at the six o'clock position, usually onto a floor.
The fix is a new gasket at every change of hands. We fit one to every Grade A and B container leaving the yard, and we sell them by the bag to fleets. It is genuinely the highest-return maintenance item in the whole category.
2. Chemical incompatibility — the expensive one
Fifty-six failures, and fifty-one of them were EPDM in contact with something petroleum-derived. EPDM is an excellent default: water, dilute acids and bases, alcohols, glycols. It is a poor choice against oils, fuels, kerosene and aromatic hydrocarbons, where it swells, softens and eventually extrudes out of the groove.

3. Over-tightening — the well-intentioned one
S60x6 is a coarse buttress thread in moulded polypropylene or polyethylene. It is designed to be hand-tightened against a captive washer. Every one of our forty over-tightening failures involved a wrench, and in eleven cases the flange itself had cracked, which turns a four-dollar problem into a valve replacement.
The failure is also delayed, which is what makes it insidious. The crack propagates over weeks. The person who put the wrench on it in April is long gone by the time it lets go in June, and the container gets blamed.
4. Reuse at reassembly — the false economy
Twenty-three failures where somebody removed a valve, did some work, and put the same gasket back. A gasket that has been compressed, removed and re-compressed almost never seals as well the second time, because the impression no longer lines up with the flange.
We keep bags of both elastomers on the rebottling bench for exactly this reason. Opening a container is a gasket event. Treat it like an oil filter.
What we would tell a fleet operator
- Buy gaskets by the hundred, in both EPDM and Viton, and keep them where the work happens.
- Colour-code or bin-label them. The most common wrong-elastomer failure is somebody grabbing the nearest ring.
- Replace on every wash cycle and every change of custody, without exception.
- Ban wrenches from the outlet. If it will not seal hand tight, the gasket or the flange is the problem, not the torque.
- Cap outlets in transit. Three of our failures were gaskets damaged by road debris on an uncapped outlet.
